The undersigned geologist was onsite this morning to evaluate foundation soils for a proposed deck addition
near the steep slope area north-northwest of the existing 1970's house and dock. As requested, shallow
exploration holes had been excavated by hand at the two, deck pier block locations closest to the slope. We
understand from the owner that the City of Edmonds requires a geotechnical evaluation because the
supporting pier blocks for the deck will be within the building setback area for the steep slope. The locations
of the two explorations am shown on the attached site plan provided by the owner.
The 20 to 25 foot high slope was at an approximate 2H: IV (Horizontal:Vertical) inclination and was thickly
vegetated with brush, forns and black berry vines. Tree stumps 2 to 3 feet in diameter were observed on the
slope. No signs of slope instability or erosion were observed on or behind the slope. Review of a surficial
geologic map ofthe area (Edmonds Quadrangle, WA by James P. Minard, 1983) showed glaciated
(lodgement till) sediments.
Soils exposed in the two exploration holes were evaluated visually with a 1/2" diameter, steel sail probe (fiill
body weight). The northeastera hole revealed dense� silty sand near the surface. In our opinion, the pier
pad(s) for the northeasum portion ofthe deck will provide suitable support when embedded I foot deep.
The 2-foot deep exploration hole at the northwest comer of the proposed deck exposed about 6 inches ofold
fill soil followed by loose, natural, silty sand. Probing revealed demo soil at 4 feeL In addition, we could
also advance the steel probe approximately 3 feet to dense soil beginning at ground surface located half -way
between the north end ofthe proposed deck and the existing deck to the south. Pier pads for the existing
deck are set on the ground surface with no apparent adverse impacts to the existing deck. We recommended
to the owner that the western and northwestern pier pads for the deck extend 3 to 4 feet deep to the
underlying dense soil. Alternatively, the surface ofthv loose soil could be re -compacted in -place to create a
firm and unyielding condition with a jumping jack compactor to prepare the pier pad area without having to
remove extra soil, provided AESI is allowed to re-evaluste the subgrado soil compaction. Any pier pads
within 10 feet from the top ofthe steep slope should be embedded at least I foot below the ground surface.
It is our opinion did constructing the deck in the proposed location will not decrease the stability ofthe
existing slope.
