Sylvester Addition Project

This engineering report presents the results of ongoing geotechnical inspections
for the Sylvester house addition and yard grading project at 7312 172nd St. SW,
Edmonds, Washington. These inspections were required as a condition of permit by
City of Edmonds.

GEOTECHNICAL INSPECTIONS:
This engineer continues to perform on -site geotechnical inspections as required
by City of Edmonds authorization. Inspections occur daily during active geotechnical
phases, and at a minimum of 2 inspection visits per week.
City of Edmonds Inspection Items:
Soil Cuts: This engineer coordinates with project contractor (Kearsley Homes) to
verify specific excavation alignment and depth of cuts (see photographs). No
temporary shoring is required due to the shallowness of excavation.
All soil cuts are stable through this date (April 29, 2007).

Sub -Grade Verification: This engineer performed on -site inspections and has
verified extremely dense, glacially consolidated sub -grade soils that easily
provide 3,000 p.s.f. bearing capacity.
"OK" to proceed with foundation formwork, reinforcing steel and concrete
placement for the house addition foundation.
This engineer continues to work with project contractor to assess the requirement
for the secondary (outside) retaining wall. Actual site conditions dictate that the
previously permitted "outside" retaining wall be eliminated in order to lessen the
load weight on the slope face.
Rather than have a heavy (non -needed) concrete retaining wall at the top -of -
slope, this engineer recommends that the future walkway zone be supported on
localized posts and small concrete piers. This design modification will greatly
lessen the overall impact to the adjacent slope. Specific geotechnical criteria to
follow.
* Retaining Wall Placement: Not yet.
Placement of Fill: On -site discussions with contractor and excavator indicate that
the southern deck / patio zone will require some amounts of fill. This engineer
laid out a setback limit dimension (from top -of -slope) in order to control the extent
and height of fill material.
No fill material has yet to be placed, however, this engineer will perform on -site
inspections to verify material type, compactive effort and overall dimensions of
the fill zone.
0 Subsurface Drainage: Not yet.
Erosion Control: Kearsley Homes properly established a rocked construction
entrance and top -of -slope siltation fencing. Additionally, exposed earth has been
covered with proper plastic tarp (see photographs).
All temporary erosion control measures are approved through this date (April 29,
2007).
SUMMARY:
Ongoing geotechnical inspections have verified proper completion of
geotechnical aspects to date (April 29, 2007).
