Pursuant to our conversation at the permit counter yesterday at City Hall, the den on the
main floor of the residence directly north of the stairs and directly west of the garage
(copy of reduced floor plan enclosed highlighting the room in question) is not permitted
to be a sleeping room. Sleeping room is defined as `a room primarily intended for
sleeping.' You have indicated that the closet door within this room is for periodic access
to the crawl space access hatch under the adjacent stairs_ This area is not intended for
storage or use as a closet as the door is substantially substandard in height.
Therefore, it is my determination as Building Official for the City of Edmonds that the
referenced room (indicated as a den on the approved plans) shall not be used as a sleeping
room nor misrepresented as a potential sleeping room in the future.
As we discussed at the permit counter you have an opportunity at this time during your
remodeling to alter the den in order to rneet the requirements of a sleeping room. If you
choose to do so you must submit a revised partial floor plan indicating bedroom use and
indicate a compliant egress window and hard wired, interconnected, with battery back-up.
