ASSESSMENT REPORT
A site observation of Corry's Cleaning Service shop was performed on 05/15/08 to
assess damage caused to the building by a vehicle impact. The building is a single
story wood and masonry structure with a wood framed roof.
The vehicle struck the north side of the structure and crashed through a 6-0" wide
store -front window. The vehicle also collided with the north end of the CMU masonry
wall adjacent to the window, damaging about 32" of the east end of that wail. Refer
to the attached photos showing the extent of damage. The beams, columns, and roof
framing members were not damaged.
The existing beam framing was visible above the suspended ceiling as well as a
layer of 2x4 ceiling joists, however the framing above the ceiling joists was not visible
due to solid diagonal sheathing above the 2x4 joists. Based on the beam layout, it is
our understanding that the roof framing is supported on the glu-lam beams and
cantilevers over the store -front window and CMU wall. We also noted that there was
not a structural header over the store -front window. Therefore, it appears that the
damaged window and CMU wall are non-bearing and do not require shoring. We did
not observe cracking or sagging of the roof which would be signs off missing
supports.
Since the damaged store -front window is non-structural and does not have a
structural header, we recommend that the contractor remove and replace this
window and metal frame. The CMU wall is non-bearing, but is part of the lateral
force -resisting system for the building, Refer to the attached SS -1 detail, which
shows an appropriate repair for this wall. Inspection of the CMU wall repairs prior to
grouting is required.
