RE: Demolition of Deck at 7414 181St Place SW, Edmonds
Dear Mr. Kim,
This letter is being sent as a follow-up to our phone conversation this morning regarding
your statement that the exterior wall of your house is sagging due to the demolition of
your deck which was done without first obtaining a building permit. You said that
originally you thought the deck was designed as a cantilever, but now you are thinking it
is not.
As 1 stated to you on the phone, immediately contact your Structural Engineer to
evaluate the structure for emergency temporary shoring requirements. Any work
deemed an emergency by the Structural Engineer shall be immediately implemented
and special inspection by the engineer for such work is required.
Provide copies of the engineer's evaluation report and special inspection reports of
the emergency shoring installation to the City by Thursday, October 29, 2008 via
fax to 425-771-0221 or email to bullisLaci.edmonds.wa.us.
Also as discussed on the phone, your designer, Mr. Brek, is scheduled to meet with Leif
Bjorback, Assistant Building Official regarding the outstanding pian review comments
that must still be addressed. Please see the attached comments and forward them to your
designer for the meeting. Your structural engineer must still address item #1, while your
designer should be able to address all other items.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 425-771-0220.
Sincerely,
*A --

RE: Pian Check: 2008-0033 Review 93
Project: Kim Deck
Project Address: 7414 1815` PI SW
During review of the plans for the above noted project, it was found that the following information,
clarifications or changes are needed. Please provide written responses as to where the changes can
be found on the plans, and submit revised plans/documents to a Permit Coordinator. Redlining of
the current set of plans is permitted provided that any structural changes are initialed and dated by
the structural engineer.
1. Previous item 1: The attachment of the ledger to the existing upper floor cantilever rim joist
is considered unconventional construction. As previously requested, provide structural
calculations stamped and signed by the structural engineer for this ledger detail. Also, part of
the "New Ledger Connection/Detail" is unreadable on the plans.
2. Previous item 8: The dimension of the opening from the deck surface to the bottom of the
guardrail cannot exceed 4". Plans show 6". Please revise.
3. Previous item 9: Provide manufacturer's installation instructions and loading information for
the guardrail.
4. The engineering dated 10/7/08 calls for the deck joists to be 2x12 @12" o.c. or double 2x12
@24" o.c. Please indicate this clearly on the plans.
