RE: Request for Alternate Design — Air Admittance Valve @ 10506 235" PI SW
Dear Mr. Steinman,
The City is in receipt of your request for alternate design (reference building permit #2008-0020) for
installation of an air admittance valve on the kitchen sink and the island sink.
For clarification, the City Building Inspector first performed a rough in plumbing inspection at your
house on October 24, 2008 where he noted the lack of foot venting at the kitchen sink as required by
the approved plans. In a subsequent phone conversation with our inspector, your plumber was told that
in order to be allowed to use an air admittance valve, it would need to be demonstrated through the
city's process for "alternate methods and materials" that a foot vent would not be easily achieved, due
to structural or other constraints.
Based on our field knowledge that conventional venting can be provided, especially in new
construction such as in this case, the current request for use of air admittance valves is denied, as it is
the City's contention that conventional venting can be provided at minimal disruption to the floor joists
and structural members while still maintaining minimum slope for the drain.
Sincerely,
9aL-
