SUBJECT: GE(1TECHNICAL EXPLORATION PLAN
ROW PERMrr APPLICATION
PIONEER WAY SLOPE RE PAIR
EDMONDS, WASHINGTON
This letter provides information regarding proposed geotechnical explorations on Pioneer Way
and a traffic control plan for conducting the explorations. 'I'lic work location is on Pioneer Way
just north of Bowdoin Way, as shown on the attached Vicinity Map and air photo. 'This work is
in support of geotechnical engineering reconiniendations for rehabilitation of the road
embankment.
PROPOSED ExPLORATIONS'
We will conduct a two -stepped exploration program, as follows:
1) We will perform non destructive Falling Weight Deftectorneter (FWD) testing in a
gridded pattern within and around the settled portion of the soutlibound lane. The settled
area measures approximately 10 feet wide (including shoulder) by 55 feet long. The
testing will take up to half a day and consist of using a trailer -mounted drop -weight test at
close intervals.
2) We will drill three borings to obtain soil samples and determine soil densities, at 2.5--foot
intervals. The borings will be within the pavement with a truck.,, or trailer -mounted
hollow -stem auger drill rig. The borings will be approximately it inches in diameter by
approximately 15 to 20 feet deep. Soil cuttings from the, auger will be shoveled during
drilling into 5--gallon buckets and loaded into a 1--ton pickup, then hauled to a gravel pit
for disposal. All soil cuttings will be removed from -the pavement with a flat -nosed
shovel, then the pavement will be swept with a broom. Any watery cuttings that cainiot
be contained and shoveled along with drier soil cuttings, such that they may pose a
hazard of creating silt -laden runoff, will be vacuumed with a shop -vac run by a generator
and placed in drums for disposal. The borcholes will be backfilled with I 0301 h 06vc Sl''
bentonite chips per Ecology requirements and the pavement patched
with concrete or permanent cold patch asphalt.

TRAFFIC CONTROL: Each phase of work will require closure of thc.sotithbound lane. Although
Pioneer Way is a low-voluiric urban road that could be controlled only with signs ai'O cones per
the MUTCD, due to the curve and inclination of the road we propose temporary traffic, control
with one flagger at the uphill side of the work area, as shown on the attached T'raftic Control
Plan.
RLwl'ORATION: All restoration of work sites to similar or better condition than existing will be
conducted the same day of drilling, as noted above.
DURATION OF WOM: The, work is anticipated to take Y2-day for the FWD testing and one day
for the borings.
'rENTATIVE DATES ANt) HOURS OF WORK: Tentatively the FWD testing will occur early in the
week of March 19, 2012 and the drilling a few days later. Actual dates will be confirmed once
the ROW permit is approved and official notice will be given to the. City at that time. The work
will be conducted between 8:OOAM and 5:00 PM, unless otherwise restricted or expanded by the
ROW permit.
Upon review of this plan, should you have questions or require additional information, please
contact this office at your earliest convenience at (425) 7711-0106.
