During a review of the plans by the Building Division for the above noted project, it was found that
the following information, clarifications, or changes are needed. A complete review cannot be
performed until the revised plans/documents, including a written response indicating where the
clouded changes can be found on the plans, have been submitted to a Permit Coordinator.
Reviews by other divisions, such as Planning, Engineering, or Fire, may result in additional
comments.

1.Detail #2 Framing Plan Clarify the callout for the 4x8 HF #2 beams to be used to
support the joists at the south end of the upper deck and along the same line below the
joists of the lower deck. They appear to be over spanned, fail in bending and deflect beyond
that allowed per Table R301.7. The calculations used to support the sizing of the 4x8 beams
(including the diagonally-placed beam at the east end) and the recently changed 4x10 beam
do not appear to be using all of the applicable factors. The differences are as follows:
The live load to be used in determining the total load for decks is 40 PSF per IBC
·
Table 1607.1 and IRC Table R301.5. The 15 PSF difference in the total load results
in a significantly higher moment when calculating for bending and deflection.
In addition to the correctly utilized size adjustment factor, the wet service and the
·
incising factors need to be applied per National Design Specification for Wood
Construction (NDS) 4.1.4 and Table 4.3.1.
The combined differences in the factors used to determine the section size and deflection
results in a larger member being required.
