Reference project: CITY OF EDMONDS PLAN CHECK #BLD2014-1020
In response to the city of Edmonds comment letter regarding the 2 x 10 rafters being capable to
carry the additional solar panel load:
The total dead load with the solar panels and existing roofing is estimated at 19 psf (7 psf
solar panels and 12 psf roof dead load — not including the rafters). We believe that the
rafters which have a measured span 13'-6" are adequate for strength, since it has "old
growth lumber" being built in 1964. There could be a potential of deflection under a full
snow load of 25 psf, which could cause cracking and may cause door and window
binding, rhe owner has been notified and accepts the risk. We believe the existing roof
system is structurally capable (based on strength) to support the additional weight of the
solar panels.
