Hi Alden,
I drove by recently and was happy to see that you are nearing completion out there. I'm sure you're looking forward to
having all of this behind you!
I checked with the Engineering Division on the requirement for paving the driveway, and unfortunately, they cannot
waive that requirement. Basically, the first twenty feet of the driveway (measured from the property line) must be a
hard surface. This could be concrete or asphalt. I did confirm with Engineering that the required parking stall off the
alley can be gravel, but the one off Dayton Street must be paved. The purpose of this requirement is so that gravel
doesn't spill into the right-of-way when cars come and go from your property. If you would like to discuss the
requirement for paving the driveway further, you'd be welcome to call or stop by and speak with someone in our
Engineering Division. They can be reached at the same number and address as in my signature below.
One option to buy some time would be to renew your permit for an additional year. Your current permit expires on
June 18, 2015, so if you don't think you'll be able to get the work completed before then, you could contact a Permit
Coordinator (prior to the expiration date) to find out what needs to be done to request a renewal. There would be a fee
of $231.25 for renewing the permit, so I'm not sure if it would be worth the renewal fee for you, but it would get you an
extra year for having to complete the work under your permit. You can contact a Permit Coordinator at (425) 771-0220
for more info on the permit renewal process.
Sorry I don't have better news, but feel free to contact us with any further questions.
Sincerely,
Jen

Subject: Driveway Question 652 Dayton St
Hi Jen -
How are you? Well, we are getting so close to the end of our project - what a journey!
I want to make a formal request to the city to remove the requirement of paving the driveway (if possible). A paved
driveway for at least one vehicle, from what we've learned is a requirement for permits exceeding a certain amount.
We already cleared it with the city to not have to touch the sidewalk which was redone to code in 1992. So, it's
specifically the existing driveway.
We do plan to pave the driveway at some point but are low on budget currently do to the hiccups we've had. The
driveway is currently compact rock and fits one vehicle. How would you recommend I make this request? I have time
today to come visit if that could work. Is there even chance to get this changed?
Thank you,
Alden Hopkins
