Scope: Install Type I hood over heavy-duty cooking appliances — makeup air system
— verify installation of existing hood to Type I requirements — required fire
suppression system under separate permit
Please be advised that the building plans for the above referenced project have been disapproved
for the purposes of obtaining a building permit. During a review of the plans by the Building
Division for compliance with the applicable building codes, it was found that the following
information, clarifications, or changes are needed. Reviews by other divisions, such as Planning,
Engineering, or Fire, may result in additional comments that require attention beyond the scope of
this letter. Items that recur on this list appear in italics.
A complete review cannot be performed until the revised plans/documents, including a
written response in itemized letter format indicating where the 'clouded' or otherwise
highlighted changes can be found on the revised plans, have been submitted to a Permit
Coordinator.
Resubmittals must be made at the Development Services Department on the 2 nd Floor of City Hall.
Permit Center hours are M, T, Th, & F from 8am-4:30pm and from 8:30am-12pm on Wednesdays.
On sheet M- 1:
I . Site/Roof Plan - Provide on the plans information regarding the installation, performance,
and operation of the 'existing hood to remain' represented in the 'Front View' detail. The
proposed hood to be installed under this permit cannot have an effect, or be affected, by the
operation of the existing hood and its components (makeup air unit location ' exhaustfan
location, etc.). The response to the plan review comment appears to be an added note
repeating the concern without providing the requested infonnation — the requested written
response could not be found among the resubmitted documents. There does not appear to be
a record of the existing hood installation, therefore infonnation regarding the installation,
performance, and operation of it needs to be provided on the plans as if for a new
installation.
2. Section Elevation View — Indicate on the plans the required installation of the field -applied
grease duct enclosure (duct wrap)from the point at which the duct originates upwards
toward the duct termination per IMC 506.3.11.2 and the product manufacturer. The
response to the plan review comments appears to be an added note stating: "Firewrap shall
originate from suspended ceiling & upwards towards the duct termination. (Product
No. 3M #615+)". As noted in IMC 506.3.11. 1, the required installation of the field -applied
grease duct enclosure (duct wrap) is from the point at which the duct originates (not from
where it penetrates the suspended ceiling) upwards toward the duct termination. The
manufacturer's installation requirements also require that the entire duct must be
protected (not from where it penetrates the suspended ceiling). To date there has not been
an approved test of the assembly where a portion of the duct is exposed.
3. Front View
a. Indicate on the plans the required installation of the field -applied grease duct
enclosure (duct wrap) from the point at which the duct originates upwards toward
the duct termination per IMC 506.3.11.2 and the product manufacturer. See review
comment #2 above.
b. Provide on the plans information regarding the installation, performance, and
operation of the 'existing hood to remain'. The proposed hood to be installed under
this permit cannot have an effect, or be affected, by the operation of the existing
hood and its components (makeup air unit location, makeup air supply location,
exhaustfan location, etc.). See review comment #1 above.
