RE: Plan Review Comments dated March 16, 2017, Structural Response
759 Cedar Street
Plan Check: BLD2016-1712
Project: Guyot SFR
Dear Mr. Miller,
The following is an itemized response to the corresponding comments in the above referenced letter.
These responses are limited to the structural engineering related items only. Response to other
comments is by others.
8. Main Floor Framing Plan - Clarify on the plans the difference in the represented placement
of the windows in the south wall of 'Bedroom #Xand of that on sheet 'A-l'— South Elevation.
The structural drawings have been revised to reflect the revised architectural drawings. Please
see the set of revised structural drawings.
9. Roof Framing Plan
a. Clarify on the plans the lateral design method used to transfer the roof diaphragm
loads between gridlines "S'and "C'where the upper and lower roofs converge over the
west end of the `Kitchen The offset of the roof levels appears to result in an "open
front diaphragm' along the west edge of the lower roof over the 'Kitchen' with the
`SWV(64") (indicated along gridline 'Vin the provided structural calculations)
resisting only the east edge of the upper roof. The load values indicated in the
provided structural calculations along gridlines `8' and 'C' and the design to resist
them may need to be changed to reflect the response to the plan review comment.
b. Clarify on the plans the callout for the 5-112x18 GLB 'low beam-' (beam `8301" in the
provided structural calculations) used to support the loads over the west end of the
`Kitchen It appears to be over spanned and deflects beyond that allowed per IRC
Table R301.7. It does not appear that the loads from the roof over the "Kitchen' have
been accountedfor.
Due to the complexity of the roof framing at two different levels, we calculated by hand
the load going into the different shearwalls. We have added the hand calculation notes
to the key plans. Please see the revised structural calculations where we have indicated

the loads going into the shearwalls. To be more accurate, we have also revised the
lateral calculations to include an additional line of shearwalls in the north -south
direction.
b. This beam has been revised to include all the applicable loads acting on it, including the
low roof area over the kitchen. Please see the revised structural calculations and
drawings.
10. Plan Notes — Framing callout 'A'— Clarify on the plans the detail callout regarding the
required installation of 'CS16'straps at the top of the door to guide proper construction and
inspection.
Please see the revised structural drawings which show the correct callout as well as the correct
detail.
Please also note that the structural drawings and calculations have been revised to reflect the revised
architectural drawings.
We trust this addresses your concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact us directly if you have any
further questions.
