NGA went to the site at the request of Jeff Sterling and Howard Clark to monitor the installation of pin piles to
support the existing foundation on the northern side of the complex.
Upon arriving on site, we met with Howard Clark, to discuss the objective of the day. The contractor planned to
install multiple pin piles, across the exterior of the building, before the contractor continued to install brackets and
prepare the site to proceed with the installation of pin piles.
The contractor used a 140-pound hammer and a 2-inch diameter, 5 foot 3 inch long, steel pin pile, which was
driven through an opening within the bracket. Upon completing the installation of the pin pile, the brackets will
be secured and used to support the existing foundation.
We observed the contractor install the following piles, identified per their label according to the plans:

We visited the site today at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff and Lisa Sterling to provide geotechnical
consultation and monitoring services for the Cascadian Apartments foundation underpinning project,
located at 9405 Edmonds Way in Edmonds, Washington.
Upon arrival to the site, we met with underpinning contractors from Advanced Foundation Supports, LLC.
The pin piles consisted of 2-inch diameter, schedule 80, galvanized steel, which were cut into 5.3-foot
lengths and connected with steel internal slip couplers. We monitored as the pin piles were driven with a
140-pound pneumatic post -driver to a refusal criterion of one inch or less of vertical movement in sixty
seconds of continuous driving. Pin piles observed to be installed today were driven to a dead stop at one
inch or less of vertical movement in 300 seconds of continuous driving. The depths to refusal and
corresponding pile numbers are listed in the table below. The depths are measured from the top of the
structural bracket placed at the base of the foundation footing.

Piles 3 8, 30, and 31 met refusal at depths less than 10 feet below the foundation, and were interpreted to
have been obstructed. We recommended the underpinning contractors confirm relocation plans, or other
method to reach refusal in native soils, with the structural engineer, per provided plans.
We have been providing monitoring of pile installation on a full-time basis. Our findings and conclusions
are based on specific observations made while on site. It is our opinion that the pin piles we observed
today were installed in accordance with the project plans and should support the planned loads.
We understand that the contractors will continue to drive exterior piles the next business day, and will
continue to monitor the installation of underpinning at the site.

We visited the site today at the request of Jeff Sterling and Howard Clark to monitor the installation of pin piles to
support the existing foundation on the northern side of the complex.
Upon arrival to the site, we met with underpinning contractors from Advanced Foundation Supports, LLC. The
pin piles consisted of 2-inch diameter, schedule 80, galvanized steel, which were cut into 5.3-foot lengths and
connected with steel internal slip couplers. We monitored as the pin piles were driven with a 140-pound
pneumatic post -driver to a refusal criterion of one inch or less of vertical movement in sixty seconds of
continuous driving. Pin piles observed to be installed today were driven to a complete stop or at least one inch or
less of vertical movement in 60 seconds of continuous driving. The depths to refusal and corresponding pile
numbers are listed in the table below. The depths are measured from the top of the foundation footing. The piles
driven observed installed today appear to have been suitably installed and should support the planned loads.

Howard Clark and Jeff Sterling decided to remove Pile #14 from the plans due to underground conduits found
during excavation for the pile.
