GENERAL
This category covers positìve pressure tested gasketing mater¡als for fire doors intended for installation on certified f¡re doors and/or certified fire
door frames or ¡n the¡r thresholds. as spec¡fied ín the indiv¡dual ceÊif¡cations. The gasketing material ¡s intended to be installed in accordance
w¡th the ¡nstallation ¡nstruct¡ons packaged with the mater¡al.
Gaskets and edge seals are categorized as follows:
Category G Edge Sealing Systems * Edge seals are gasket materials that have demonstrated their abitity to assist the door ¡n meetíng the
positive pressurà fìre test requ¡rements. They expand and fill the gaps around the door edges to prevent the passage of hot smoke and gases.
These mater¡als are requ¡red for Category B Swinging Type Fire Doors. Pos¡tive Pressure Tested (GSZN), Edge seals are surface applied to frames
or doors. These seals may or may not afiect the leakage (smoke) requirements for the smoke ("S") ratlng. Edge Sealing Systems are eíther
certified for general use on all products ín a door type fam¡ly or l¡mited to individual door manufacturers as noted in the ¡nd¡vidual cert¡f¡cations.
Edge seals tñat are also smoke seals ãre denoted as Category G/Category H Edge Seal/Smoke and Draft Control Gasketing in the individual
certificåt¡ons.
Category H Smoke ãnd Draft Control Gaskêt¡ng - Gasketing materials that are surface appl¡ed to a door and frame assembly to comply with
the rãquiiements of ANSI/UL 10C, "Posit¡ve Pressure F¡re Tests of Door Assembl¡es," and ANSI/UL 1784, "Air Leakage Tests of Door Assembl¡es."
Smoke ãnd draft control gasket¡ng is e¡ther certif¡ed for general use on all products in a door type family or limited to indivìdual door
manufacturers as noted in the ìnd¡v¡dual certificãtions.
Category t Gaskets - Gãsket materials that ãre added to a door assembly for purposes other than Category G Edge Seals ãnd Category H
Smoke and Draft Control Gaskets. They are used for purposes such as $reather stripp¡ng, sound control, etc, Category I Gasketing Materials have
only been invest¡gated to pos¡tive pressure with respect that they do not contribute to flaming during the f¡re test. They have not been evaluated
for any contrÌbution for a door assembly to help meet the positive pressure requirements.
Gasketing materials consist of a metal frame or a flexible material. either mechanically secured within a metal frame or housing or applied by
means ofa pressure sensitive adhesive to the perimeter of the cert¡fied fire door and/or certifÌed door fr¿me or installed with¡n the¡r thresholds,
ðs spec¡f¡ed in the ¡nd¡vidual certificat¡ons.
The gasket¡ng mater¡al can be installed on the certified fire doors at the fire door and/or frame manufacturer's plant or at the job s¡te. Category G
mater¡als are mater¡als that ass¡st with doors meet¡ng the positive pressure test requirements. Category H Gasketing Mater¡als for fìre doors have
been ¡nvestigated only with respect to determination that the materials do not adversely affect the fire rating of fire doors in which they are
¡nstalled. Calegory J Gasketing Materials have only been investigated with respect to determinat¡on that the materials do not adversely affect the
fire rating of fìie doors in which they are installed. Gasketing material ident¡f¡ed for use at the meet¡n9 edges of pairs of doors is not intended to
replace tñe astragal (¡f required by the door manufacturer) nor to alter the clearance between doors. as specified in ANSI/NFPA 80, "Fire Doors
and Other Open¡ng Protectives," or ¡n the door manufacturer's ¡nstallation instructions.

RE: Edmonds Mixed Use Building Waterproofing
The buílding enclosures design for the Edmonds Mixed Use Building project, Edmonds, WA, reviewed by
Steve Depew. The building enclosure consists of the part of the Buildings that physically separates the outside
of exterior environment and which weatherproofs, waterproofs or otherwise protects the Building or its
components trom waier or moisture intrusion and includes, but is not iimited to, ihat portion of the roofs, walls,
balcony support columns, decks, windows, doors, vents, and other penetrations through the exterior walls, which
waterproof, weatherproof or otherwise protect the Building or its components from water or moisture intrusion.
Specifically, the installation procedures and practices for the components of the Building consisting of
penetrations, including but not limited to, windows and doors; flashing; vapor barriers; siding; and caulking were
reviewed.
Scope of work:
1. Provide design for all waterproofing of all building envelope elements the new construction
2. Design of WRB properly shingled with flashing, penetrations and adjacent WRB
3. Design of flashings at all window and door opening headers
4. Design of target flashings at all building penetrations
5. Design of hoods over meter and cable penetrations
6. Accomplish periodic site visits for panel construction and panel installation to verífy the work is
accomplished per design and best practices
To the extent reasonably ascertainable and in the professionaljudgment the design and site reviews
assure the building enclosure meets acceptable standards, methods and practices and will not have an adverse
effect the performance of the building enclosure to waterproof, weatherproof or otherwise protect the building
and its components from water or moisture intrusion. An adverse effect involves more than technical and must
be significant to a reasonable person but does not require the Building to be uninhabitable or unfit for its intended
pufposes.
