Dear Mrs. Vera Shaw:
LAURA M. HALL
MAYOR
As you were informed last month, sewers are available for connection in
your area of the city. Property owners having failed or failing septic
systems should connect as soon as possible. All other owners are
encouraged to do so as well.
At this time, there is no established timeline to connect to the sewer
system. However, the City does reserve the right to require hookup
within 60 days if a septic system is failing or if other health hazard
exists.
Please be aware that your property was not originally assessed for the
sewers that front your property. At the time the sewers were installed
under L.I.D. 189, your property was not in the city and, therefore,
could not be included as part of the L.I.D. Thus, in order to be fair
to the other property owners that financed L.I.D. 189 as well as those
in the adjoining L.I.D. 213, the city requires you pay a latecomers
assessment fee prior to connecting.
Following our procedures as described below should simplify the
installation process and minimize inconveniences.
1. Pay the latecomers assessment fee of $12.15 per zone front
foot which equates to $3249.27.
2. Obtain a side sewer connection and inspection permit at the
Community Services Building, 250 Fifth Avenue North.
3. Read all requirements located on the back of the permit.
Flyers will be available from the Permit Coordinator when
your side sewer permit is issued.
4. If you or your contractor have any questions at this time,
please contact Everett Akau at 771-0235, extension 354 or
myself at extension 349. This way we can clarify anything
before the actual installation takes place.
5. Proceed with the installation.

6. Schedule an inspection providing the City 24 hours advance
notice. Make sure that you provide the permit number at this
time and have the permit at the job site.
7. Once an inspection is complete and accepted by our inspector,
you will have two (2) days to break in the top of the
existing septic tank and fill it with sand. Required by the
Uniform Plumbing Code. At this time, our inspector will
finalize your permit.
Please feel free to contact this department if you are unsure about any
steps in this process. I will be glad to have an inspector meet with
you and go through the procedure so we can make the entire process as
simple as possible for you.
Thank you for your cooperation.
