Smith 9219 Olympic View Drive ` Edmonds, Washington _ a Dear Mrs. Smith: -j, In accordance with your request of August 27, 1986 we visited your property at 9219 Olympic View Drive on that date. The purpose of the visit was to review an existing condition at the location of the new basement stairs. The excavation for the stairs has exposed the bottoms of the existing retaining walls and revealed that the walls do not have footings. } Our concern is the lateral stability of the existing %' retaining walls. The solution which you •{ y proposed, to use a concrete stair in lieu of the wood framed stair shown on the drawing by L. Archibald, Designer, is suitable. Since the retaining walls are low and are not bearing walls and you don't intend to use them as such the expense of adding a footing doesn't appear justified. And the footing would not provide the lateral restraint that the 'concrete stair will. Please find enclosed our drawing P1 which shows the plan and section of the proposed reinforced concrete stair. In addition we recommend that: 1. The walls be propped immediately with the props remaining in place until the backfilling for the stair is completed. r FN' 2. Vertical drains be installed at V0" behind .No east wall. The.drains being connected to the lower:' slab sump. 3. All backfill for the stair be compacted in 6" lifts.
