Your file has been routed to me for review of the design of your
proposed deck. The design, as represented by the plan that you
submitted, is not typical of cantilever designs that I'm familiar
with. For this reason, I will request that a licensed structural
engineer's stamp accompany the calculations you have provided.

The unusual length of the free -end cantilever in relationship to the
shorter, secured end of the cantilever causes me to believe that two
potential problems could occur: 1) that the loads transferred from the
free end of the cantilever could cause the connection to fail on the
shorter end, thus allowing the cantilever to rotate and fall;
and, 2) the loads transferred from the longer free end of the
cantilever would cause a significant deflection in the existing floor
of the home.
These concerns are further compounded by the fact that the deck is
existing and the design was implemented without a building permit.
Immediate action must be taken to ensure that no design error has been
made and that a potential hazard does not exist. Therefore, I request
that you respond to my office within seven working days"with a stamped
set of plans and, further, that you not permit that deck to be used
until an approved design has been accepted by my department.
