Stevens Health Center Eire Rating Upgrade BUILDING DEPARTMENT
CITY OF EDMONDS
Rick,
Per your request I am providing a narrative regarding the recent fire alarm modifications implemented in
support of the fire rating upgrade of the corridors at Stevens Health Center. Currently the modifications
include -
1 .
nclude:1. Above ceiling smoke detection at each return air inlet from the corridor including below ceiling
remote indication.
2. Control of the fire smoke dampers on floors one, two, and three.
3. Individual control of the roll -down fire doors separating tenant spaces from the corridor.
4. Individual control of the roll -down curtain fire doors at each of the elevator lobbies.
5. Expand smoke detection within five feet for each roll -down door separating tenant spaces from
the corridor at the interior (tenant) space.
6. Expand smoke detection in the common corridors so that complete coverage of the common
corridor is achieved.
In response to requests made by the AHJ, we have discussed the following additional items beyond the
measures listed above:
1. Addition of control relays for all heat pump units to provide for shut -down in the event of an
alarm. These will utilize the same control circuit as the fire smoke dampers for synchronized
control.
2. Additional smoke detection at each heat pump above the ceiling at the center lobby of each
floor. Smoke detectors will have below ceiling indication. This along with the smoke detection
already in place will provide above ceiling smoke detection in proximity to all heat pumps.
3. Provide an alarm matrix for the fire alarm sequence of events. This has been added to the
revised drawings.
The fire alarm modifications include the provision of a revised zone map showing all devices. On the
zone map, each addressable device will be shown with the corresponding address as it reports at the
fire alarm control panel and remote annunciator. Each detection device in the building will be displayed
individually with its own address and description to facilitate emergency personnel response. Due.to
the addressable approach of the system it is possible to bypass individual detection devices or outputs
individually while leaving the rest of the system in place for the purposes of repair or maintenance.
The alarm matrix is based on requirements from the Edmonds Fire Department including my
conversation with Mike Smith on March 260'2007. The roll -down doors separating tenant spaces from
the corridor would drop if any alarm device was activated on that floor including above ceiling devices.
The elevator curtain roll -down doors would activate only if the smoke detector at the elevator lobby at
that fire curtain was activated. The fire smoke damper release and heat pump shut -down on all floors
would occur on general alarm from any device regardless of the location. Please let me know if there is
any additional information I can provide.
Sincerely, f
