The currently approved awnings are essential flat panels of egg plaint colored slunbrella fabric
placed on top of black steel frames. A curved hanging basket bracket is incorporated into the
framing.
Three problems have come up with this design:
L The steel frame is too heavy for the concrete walls to support. During renovation is was
discovered that the concrete walls contain no rebar and are not capable of supporting
much weight especially cantilevered out five feet over the sidewalk. In fact, the walls
were originally intended to be an integral part of the structural building supporting
joists, etc. The structural engineering required that the walls not be used to support the
building, but rather an entire structural steel framework had to be built inside the
building to support the upper floor and roof. In fact, the walls are now tied back to the
steel framework. in short, the building now supports the old walls rather than the old
walls supporting the building. The awnings had to be redesigned to be much lighter.
2. The approved design conflicts with the required street light pole at the 5th & Dayton
entrance
3. The approved design would block the signage for the new tenants.

The proposed design uses a black aluminum framework with the same color and same sunbrella
material. Rather than being essentially flat, the proposed awnings area more traditional
triangular design. Although still providing 5 feet of horizontal cover, this design is thousands of
pounds lighter and the two point attachment reduces the levering force on the walls. The
proposed awnings still cover the same 7 windows and the proposed 8 hanging basket brackets
are still located in the same places and in the, same quantity as already approved. As the two
entrances are already recessed, they provide weather protection and are clear and distinct
entrance points. Therefore, the standing seam metal awnings originally proposed for the two
entrances are deleted.
