Dear Wade:

Re: Commercial Building
# wld3 ';7
In response to your verbal request, I forward herewith the following
discussion of the it resisting system for the Commercial
Building in Edmonds, Washington with specific reference to resistance
of lateral forces by rotation u
lateral force resisting element
sing plywood diaphr-ams. The basic
s for the structure consist of reionw
forced masonry walls -on the north, south and west sides of the structure
with plywood shear walls on the east side of the structure,. Because
of the marked difference
vest side and *_ the plywood
in stiffness between the masonry wall on the
shear Walls on the east side, the theoretical
center of rotation for the structure is located almost directly above
the west or masonry wall. For this reason, the lateral shear resisted
by the west wall is equal to the entire earthquake shear acting on
the structure and rotational components of the earthquake shear are
resisted by the plywood shear walls located on the east building line.
Although some rotation may occur as a result of lateral earthquake
'Forces, both'the west masonry wall and the east plywood shear walls
are capable of resisting the forces induced in them and the structure
as designed does conform with the requirements of the Uniform Building
Code.
The following specific criteria must be carefully adhered to to insure
proper performance:
dw
1. Anchor bolts between the top of the masonry walls and the wood plate
shall be spaced as follows: north wall, 5/8" 0 bolts at 2-1'on center;
sbuth wall, 5/8" 0 bolts at 32" on center; west wall, 5/811-0 bolts
at 32" on center.
2. Solid blocking must be provided between the truss bearing points
on the west wall. The blocking should extend from the top of the
plate to the underside of the roof and must, be securely nailed to
the top plate. We recommend that nailing be 16d nails spaced at
41' on center between the solid blocking and the top plate. In
addition, the plywood roof sheeting must be securely nailed to the
top edge of the blocking,, using _10d nails at 4" on' center.

L
Mr. Wade James
Page 2
August 26, 1971
3. Diagonal bracing between the trusses should be provided over the
beam located along the east wall of the structure. The diagonal
bracing should be installed and connected in accordance with the
sketches provided to you by,previous correspondence.
4. The girder trusses located at each end of the structure should be
sheathed with 1/211 plywood blocked and nailed in accordance with
the sketches shown on our calculation sheet dated August 20, 1971.
The plywood roof sheeting for the low roof adjacent to the trusses
should be nailed with 10d nails at 4" on center'
at all edges and
10d nails at 12" on center at intermediate supports.
5. The wood shear walls located along the east building line must be
sheathed with 1/211 Structural I plywood on one side only and
nailed with 10d nails at'31' on center at all edges and 10d nails
at 12" on center for all intermediate supports. Tie -downs for the
shear' -walls should be provided at each end of each shear wall in
accordance with the detail shomn on Sheet 1 of our calculations
dated 9/20/71 The anchor bar for the tie -down shall be embedded
in Por-Rok anchoring cement as manufactured by the Hallemite
Corporation or an equivalent non -shrinking grout mixture,
I have included one additional set of our calculations together with
copies of anchor bar pull-out tests and a catalog cut on PoreaRok
for your reference.
Please contact me if you require any additional information in this
regard.

Dear Mr, Whitcutt.Ob
(City Noise Ordinance
{Versus B & H Grocery
(at 1306 Olympic View Drive
This is to inform you that we have been hired by the owners of B & H Grocery
to look into the existing noise problem associated with air-conditioning fan/com-
pressor units at the subject location and then to provide necessary acoustical
treatment for the control of excessive noise, consistent -with the noise ordinance
established by the City of Edmonds. L.
Because of the nature and location of the fan/compressor units in the mechanical
room of the subject facility, it is absolutely essential to provide some kind,,of
ventilating system for the dissipation of heat build-up, prior to designing an
acoustical system for noise control. We have ordered a separate exhaust fan
for this purpose, which will be installed by May ZOth, if all deliveries are as
promised. The acoustical enclosure for noise control in the mechanical room
has already been designed and partially assembled. Soon after the heat problem
is taken care of, we will be able to correct the unsatisfactory noise environment
that now prevails in the vicinity of the mechanical. room.
Please do not hesitate to call us, if you have and questions.

VS
B & H Grocery
Dear Mr. Whitcutt,:
As a follow-up of our phone conversation on June 30,
document our work thus far and inform. you of what we int
future.
1972, we wish to
end to do in the
To begin with., we made noise measurements on Jun. 27, 1972, between
the hours of 12:15 am. and 1:30 am, so that we were assured of experiencing
the actual background ambient noise levels as they exist an the area during
the hours specified by the Qrdinar!ceo
Unfortuately, we find that we were only successful in dropping the levels
to within the daytime requirements of 60 dBA, but fell 12 dBA to 18 dBA short
of the 44 dBA evening requirements. The noise from, the two smaller com-
pressors, emitting through the opening provided for the new ventilation fay.,
is now the main source of the rern.ining problem.
Our plans now
are to desigh
and build an
enclosure
wall, that will be able
to meet these very
stringent
requirements.
To do this,
we will need an-
other three weeks,
4
I wish to take this opportunity to state that 40 dBA in an area that is
zoned to allow a commerical grocery, is very difficult if nat im,pvss:ible
to get, without entailing a great deal of expense to the awnera

r
'ra
L.
Where a grocery boarders on a residental area such as this, it is very
unfair not to warn a. business of the ordinance limits, so that provision
can be made to consider this requirement before the building is built.
If it would be of value to you and your department for me to discuss
these problems with you in. detail, I would be verb glad to do so.
Thank you for your understanding on our behaff, We certainly
appreciate the cooperation we are receivg from your officeo

this wild, confim mar telephone corvers, ion with Mr. Spanfelner
of your office on December 7th regarding the noise produced by
the compressors on the west wa13. of the store adj*acent to ray

It is my understanding that your office will preys the matter
of reducing that noise by the placement of sound absorbing
materials around the motors. Mr. Spanf elner and I agreed
that two weeks from the date of our conversation wauld constitute
a reasonable oppartu.ty for the vwnex of the store to affect a
substantial modification of this present nuisance,
