The Fire Department provides the following comments and corrections in accordance with the 2003
International Fire Code and Edmonds Community Development Code:
All permits Sheet A0
1. SEPARATE PERMITS
a. Delete reference to FIRE SPRINKLER. Sprinkler is not required except for 5 or more
townhomes.
Exceptions:
i Voluntary NFPA 13R sprinkler allowed with penetrations meeting IRC R317
ii Voluntary NFPA 13D sprinkler allowed for each dwelling with no penetrations.
Iii Voluntary sprinkler system requires Fire Connection permit.
2. SITE PLAN
a. Draw clear approved turnaround where DRIVE AISLE takes turn so that BLDG A
does not exceed 150’ vehicular access for firefighting purposes.
b. Show fire lane from north DRIVE AISLE entry to south DRIVE AISLE egress. Fire
lane shall be striped with 4” yellow perimeter striping and identified with words “FIRE
LANE – NO PARKING”. Letters shall be 12” high with 2” stroke spaced 50 lineal feet
on alternating insides of lane.
3. BUILDING CODE
a. Clarify IRC construction and delete IBC references.
b. Correct OCCUPANCY GROUPS are R3/U.
c. Building is not required to be “FULLY SPRINKLERED”. Remove from table and
recalculate.
i. Voluntary sprinkler systems: Automatic sprinkler system increase may be
taken for approved NFPA 13 (903.3.1.1) or NFPA 13R (903.3.1.2) systems.
NFPA 13D (903.1.1.3) systems for dwellings do not meet minimum
requirements for height or area increases IBC 504.2
4. ZONING CODE

5. CONTRACTOR COORDINATION NOTES
a. Delete 2.C and 2.D or re-evaluate for voluntary sprinkler system(s).
b. Add NOTE: “FIRE PREVENTION PROGRAM SUPERINTENDENT POC IS (add
name and telephone # here) AND 24 HOUR TELEPHONE CONTACT FOR
EMERGENCY PURPOSES. FP PROGRAM SUPERINTENDENT SHALL HAVE
AUTHORITY TO ENFORCE FIRE SAFETY PROVISIONS.”
