Thank you for submitting a building permit application for a freestanding sign for Edmonds
th
Health Clinic at 7707 617 5 Avenue South in the RM-1.5 zone. I have reviewed the above
building permit application for the Planning Division and it was found that the following
information, corrections, or clarifications will need to be addressed before the Planning
Division review can continue.
1.Number of Freestanding Signs: The maximum number of signs is three per site or three per
physically enclosed business space on commercial sites with multiple tenants per ECDC
20.60.025.4. The total sign area of ALL signs on site needs to comply with the maximum
total paramagnet sign area, which is based on the length of the building containing the
primary public entrance. Freestanding signs are discouraged per ECDC 20.60.045.A and in
all zones, each lot or building site shall be permitted no more than one freestanding sign.
One option would be to design one freestanding monument sign for the entire building to
use, and in doing so, have the dentist’s nonconforming pole sign removed.
2.Pole Sign:Pole signs are freestanding signs where the structural support of the sign is a
pole(s) per ECDC 20.60.005. Pole signs are not permitted in RM-zones. Any replacement
freestanding sign would have to be designed as a monument sign.
3.Height of Sign: The maximum height of freestanding signs at this site is 14 feet, provided it
meets the required setbacks. The required setbacks in the RM-1.5 zone are 15’ from the
street (south and west) property lines and 10’ from the side (north and east) property lines.
Please show compliance with setbacks on a plot plan, unless the sign is designed to be less
than 3’ in height.
4.Sign Area: The maximum area for freestanding signs at this site is 24 square feet (or 48
square feet for a group sign). If you choose to re-design a monument sign for the entire
building, please keep these figures in mind. Also, there are several existing wall signs. Even
if you were to re-design a monument sign for the entire building to use and have the

dentist’s nonconforming freestanding sign removed, you’ll still need to show that you’re
not exceeding the maximum sign area for the site (which may be divided between the wall
signs and one freestanding sign). Please provide a measurement on the plot plan that
shows the length of the building wall containing the primary public entrance. A note in the
file indicates that it may be 67’9” – please confirm.
