Dear Lance;
In March 2010, HWA GeoSciences Inc. (HWA) prepared a geotechnical engineering report
(HWA, 20 10) for your property providing subsurface information and recommendations for your
remodel project. The geotechnical engineering report addressed all applicable City of Edmonds
Earth Subsidence Landslide Hazard Area (ESLHA) requirements for the site and is attached to
this letter report in Appendix A.
In October 2015, 1 evaluated two raised planter boxes at the site. This letter presents my
observations and conclusions regarding these planters.
RAIs1 D PLAN ER BOX>cS
Based on information provided by Mr. Nylander, two raised planter boxes were constructed
using treated timber and cedar siding. Pictures 1 and 2 show the boxes. The two planters are
approximately 43 inches by 118 inches and 34 inches by 95 inches, respectively. About
1.75 cubic yards of topsoil were used to fill both boxes. Topsoil depths in the boxes vary from.
about 7.5 inches to 11 inches. The topsoil is supported on a wooden platform, off the ground, to
allow for drainage. Below the suspended topsoil, the ground surface is covered with separator
fabric and a layer of drain rock.

HWA Project No. 2009-148-21
Based on my evaluation of the boxes, it appears that they were well constructed and that
adequate drainage was provided. In my opinion, these boxes do not adversely affect the slope
above and below the boxes and they do not compromise the stability of the hillside.
0
In summary, to the best of our knowledge, and taking all ESLHA concerns into account, the
small planter boxes constructed on the subject property were constructed in general accordance
with current standards of practice and do not adversely affect the slopes on the property and do
not present hazards to persons or property.
We appreciate having had the opportunity to provide geotechnical engineering and inspection
services on this project. If you have any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please
contact the undersigned at (425) 774-0106.
Sincerely,
HWA GEOSCIENCES INC.
