01 TYPICAL PLANTING DETAIL
VEGETATION MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING NOTES
SUMMARY
VEGETATION RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT IS DETAILED ON THIS PLAN SHEET
(SHEET 2). INVASIVE SPECIES IN THE VEGETATION RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT
AREA WILL BE REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH SITE -APPROPRIATE NATIVE
SPECIES. GAPS IN THE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT AREA WILL BE DENSELY
PLANTED AROUND EXISTING NATIVE SHRUBS AND TREES. ADDITIONAL NATIVE
TREES AND SHRUBS ARE PLANTED GENERALLY AT THE DENSITY OF 18-FOOT AND
8-FOOT ON -CENTER, RESPECTIVELY, TO INCREASE DENSITY OF THE EXISTING
NATIVE UNDERSTORY. ENHANCED AREA WILL AMOUNT TO 20,170 SQUARE FEET.
ENHANCEMENT WILL INCREASE BOTH DENSITY AND STRUCTURAL DIVERSITY OF
NATIVE PLANTS IN ALL STRATA.
NO NATIVE VEGETATION WILL BE REMOVED. EXISTING SNAGS AND DOWNED WOOD
WILL BE RETAINED. ALL WORK WILL BE DONE BY HAND (HAND-HELD MACHINERY
ONLY) TO MINIMIZE DISTURBANCE.
THE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT AREA WILL UNDERGO MAINTENANCE TWICE
YEARLY OR AS NEEDED AND BE SUBJECT TO YEARLY MILESTONES TO MONITOR
PERFORMANCE. THE SITE WILL BE MONITORED FOR THREE YEARS OR UNTIL
GOALS ARE ACHIEVED.
RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT GOALS
1. GENERAL: MORE THAN 30% NATIVE VEGETATION RETENTION WILL BE
ACHIEVED ON THE SITE.
2. REMOVE ANY NON-NATIVE AND INVASIVE SPECIES IN THE VEGETATION
RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT AREA. IN -FILL PLANT ENTIRE VEGETATION
RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT AREA WITH NATIVE SHRUBS AND TREES
WHERE NEEDED TO BRING SHRUB AND TREE DENSITY TO 1.5 AND 8 FEET
OC, RESPECTIVELY. DEPOSE OF INVASIVE PLANTS OFFSITE.
3. MAINTAIN VEGETATION RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT AREA FREE OF
INVASIVE SPECIES FOR THREE YEARS.
4. MAINTAIN ALL EXISTING NATIVE PLANTS IN THE VEGETATION RETENTION
AND ENHANCEMENT AREA.
INSTALLATION
1. SITE PREPARATION, INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL, AND PLANTING WILL BE
CONDUCTED UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL
(MITIGATION SPECIALIST, HABITAT BIOLOGIST, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, OR
ARBORIST WITH MITIGATION EXPERIENCE).
2. REFER TO GENERAL WORK SEQUENCE FOR INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS.
MAINTENANCE
1. MAINTENANCE WILL TAKE PLACE TWICE YEARLY (OR AS OFTEN AS
NECESSARY), IN SPRING AND FALL, FOR AT LEAST THREE YEARS
FOLLOWING INSTALLATION, AND LONGER IF NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE
GOALS.
2. INSTALLED PLANTS WILL BE WATERED BY HAND OR OTHER SEMI -MANUAL
IRRIGATION SYSTEMS AS NECESSARY FOR 2 YEARS FOLLOWING
INSTALLATION, OR UNTIL PLANTS ARE ESTABLISHED.
3. DEAD INSTALLED PLANTS WILL BE REPLACED AS NEEDED DURING FALL
MAINTENANCE VISITS.
4. ALL INVASIVE WOODY PLANTS IN THE PLANTING AREAS WILL BE REMOVED
DURING MAINTENANCE, INCLUDING ALL PART OF THE PLANTS AND ROOT
SYSTEM.
5. NON-NATIVE WEEDS SHALL BE CLEARED FROM THE 18-INCH MULCH RINGS
OF ALL INSTALLED PLANTS.
6. APPLY WOOD CHIP MULCH RINGS AROUND INSTALLED PLANTS TO MAINTAIN
A THICKNESS OF 4 INCHES AND DIAMETER OF 18 INCHES IN AREA WHERE
MULCH IS NEEDED TO ENCOURAGE PLANT ESTABLISHMENT AND MINIMIZE
COMPETING NON-NATIVE WEEDS.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
THE VEGETATION RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT AREA WILL BE MEASURED
AGAINST THE FOLLOWING PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.
1. SURVIVAL:
a. 90% OF INSTALLED PLANTS WILL BE ALIVE BY THE END OF YEAR 1.
PLANTS WILL BE REPLACED AS NEEDED TO ACHIEVE THIS STANDARD.
b. AT LEAST 80% SURVIVAL OF INSTALLED PLANTS WILL BE ACHIEVED IN
YEARS 2 AND 3.
2. NATIVE WOODY VEGETATION COVER:
a. 50% COVER OF NATIVE TREES AND SHRUBS WILL BE ACHIEVED BY YEAR 1
WITHIN THE VEGETATION RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT AREA.
VOLUNTEER PLANTS MAY COUNT TOWARDS THIS COVER STANDARD.
b. 80% COVER OF NATIVE TREES AND SHRUBS WILL BE ACHIEVED BY THE
END OF YEAR 3. VOLUNTEER PLANTS MAY COUNT TOWARDS THIS COVER
STANDARD.
NOTE: THE SITE PRESENTLY MEETS THE NATIVE WOODY VEGETATION COVER
STANDARD; MEASUREMENT OF COVER WILL BE PERFORMED ONLY IF THE
STANDARD IN NOT CLEARLY MET, PER VISUAL ASSESSMENT, IN MONITORING
YEARS.
3. NATIVE PLANT DIVERSITY: AT LEAST FIVE NATIVE SHRUB SPECIES WILL BE
ESTABLISHED IN THE VEGETATION AREA BY THE END OF YEAR 3.
VOLUNTEER PLANTS MAY COUNT TOWARDS THIS STANDARD.
4. INVASIVE COVER: NO MORE THAN 10% COVER BY INVASIVE PLANTS WILL BE
PRESENT IN ANY MONITORING YEAR.
MONITORING METHODS
MONITORING WILL BE CONDUCTED YEARLY AFTER FALL MAINTENANCE. A
MONITORING REPORT WILL BE PREPARED AFTER EACH MONITORING VISIT. THE
REPORT WILL INCLUDE:
1. COUNTS OF DEAD (INSTALLED) PLANTS;
2. PERCENT SURVIVAL OF INSTALLED PLANTS;
3. PERCENT COVER ESTIMATE, OBTAINED VISUALLY UNLESS SITE COVER
DECREASES FROM PRESENT CONDITIONS;
4. SPECIES COUNT OF INSTALLED PLANTS;
5. A VISUAL ASSESSMENT OF PLANT HEALTH;
6. A VISUAL ESTIMATE OF INVASIVE PLANT COVER;
7. SITE PHOTOS TAKEN AT ESTABLISHED PHOTO POINTS;
8. NOTES ON SITE DISTURBANCE, LITTER, VANDALISM, OR OTHER ACTIONS
THAT MAY IMPAIR HABITAT FUNCTION; AND
9. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MAINTENANCE AND/OR REPLANTING AS
NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.
GENERAL WORK SEQUENCE
1. REMOVE ALL PARTS OF INVASIVE PLANTS IN ALL INDICATED AREAS AND
DISPOSE MATERIAL OFF -SITE. HAND-HELD MACHINERY OR GLYPHOSATE
BASED HERBICIDE USAGE ARE LIMITED AND MIGHT REQUIRE ADDITIONAL
PERMITS TO BE OBTAINED BY THE CONTRACTOR.
2. INSTALL PLANTS ACCORDING TO THE DENSITY AND TYPICAL PLANTING
DETAIL AS SHOWN ON THIS SHEET DURING FROST -FREE, DORMANT
GROWING SEASON (SEPTEMBER THROUGH MARCH) ONLY.
3. WATER EACH PLANT THOROUGHLY BY HAND/HOSE TO REMOVE AIR
POCKETS.
4. INSTALL A 4-INCH-THICK LAYER OF COARSE WOOD CHIP MULCH AROUND
THE BASE OF EACH INSTALLED PLANT IN AN 18-INCH-DIAMETER CIRCLE.
MULCH SHOULD NOT TOUCH PLANT STEMS. NOTE: WHERE PRESENT
MOISTURE AND WEED CONDITIONS ARE SUCH THAT MULCH IS NOT NEEDED,
MULCH MAY BE EXCLUDED AS LONG AS PERFORMANCE STANDARDS ARE
MET.
CONTINGENCY PLAN
IF PERFORMANCE STANDARDS ARE NOT MET BY THE END OF THE MONITORING
PERIOD, A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL WILL EVALUATE THE SITE FOR CAUSES OF
FAILURE AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR REMEDIATION. MONITORING WILL
CONTINUE UNTIL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS ARE MET.
NOTES
1. THE VEGETATION RETENTION AND ENHANCEMENT AREA WILL BE
PRESERVED FOR THE LIFE OF THE PROJECT.
2. MINOR SPECIES SUBSTITUTIONS MAY BE MADE IN THE FIELD.
3. ONLY HEALTHY PLANT MATERIALS WILL BE INSTALLED.
4. ACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES WILL BE CONDUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
DETAILS OF THE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT PLAN.
