Subject: RESUBMITTAL - Necessity of Portable Classroom at Chase Lake Elementary School
To whom it may concern,
In response to the City of Edmonds Municipal Code 17.100 Community Facilities, paragraph L. Schools,
the Edmonds School District has a need for one portable classroom at Chase Lake Elementary School
due to a state mandated reduction in class sizes (lower student / teacher ratios), or the number of
students allowed per classroom primarily at the kindergarten thru third grade levels.
Chase Lake Elementary School has recently been designated as a high poverty school (over 50% free and
reduced lunch). The state guidelines for high poverty schools has an even lower student / teacher ratio
than non -high poverty schools, Chase Lake has 25 built classrooms, all of which are occupied. The
current student teacher ratio at the lower grade levels is approximately 25 students to 1 teacher. Next
school year additional staff will be hired in an effort to reduce class sizes down to approximately 20
students to I teacher. This creates the need for additional classroom space.
In order to, successfully accomplish the educational mission and objectives of the District in accordance
with applicable state and federal statues, regulation and guidelines, the District would like to provide
one additional portable classrooms to provide the appropriate classroom space to accommodate
reduced class sizes.
I hope this helps better support the need for a portable classroom. Please don't hesitate with any
questions regarding this matter.
Sincerely,
Matt Finch
