Subject: Field Reports - Geotechnical Inspections
Hadfield New Residence
506 6t" Ave. S; Edmonds, Washington
City of Edmonds Plan Check No. 2006 0619
This engineering report presents the results of ongoing geotechnical inspections
for the new Hadfield residence at 506 6 t Ave. S,. Edmonds, Washington. These
inspections were required as a condition of permit by City of Edmonds.
REFERENCES:
• City of Edmonds approved Project Plans
• Geotechnical Report and Final Review by PanGeo
• City of Edmonds testing agreement for geotechnical items

BACKGROUND:
This engineer understands that Mr. Joel Hadfield owns and lives in the existing
residence at 507 a Ave_ S. Mr. Hadfield has submitted plans for a new residence on
the immediately adjacent lot (to the west) for a new home.
It is understood that PanGeo performed the geotechnical investigation and made
recommendations for recommendations, foundation bearing, etc. The City of Edmonds
issued a building permit subject to geotechnical inspections (as listed).
This engineer was contacted by project superintendent, Keith Launders (K.L.
Enterprises), to perform the geotechnical inspections and make "improved"
recommendations for excavation and temporary shoring.

INSPECTIONS:
This engineer performs on-site geotechnical inspections (daily during active
excavation, Eco -Block shoring, and foundation preparation). At a minimum, 1
inspection visit per week is performed.
• Excavation: This engineer verified that all excavation encountered dense, native,
sub -grade sands. The previously submitted geotechnical report and project
plans indicated an "open cut" that would "daylight" within a few feet of the existing
Hadfield residence. This is geotechnically unacceptable.
it is essential to minimize excavation proximity to the existing Hadfield
residence. This engineer recommended that a more vertical cut with Eco -Block
shoring be utilized. This engineer provided geotechnical recommendations to
project superintendent (Keith Launders) and excavation contractor. The
proposed cut is approximately 10 feet deep. This engineer recommended the
use of 5 -high Eco -Blocks at a 1 H:6V batter.
• Tem ora Shoring
: This engineer verified the proper installation of the
temporary Eco -Block shoring. Base Eco -Blocks were well founded in dense sub -
grade sands easily providing 3,000 p.s.f. bearing capacity. Block linkage, batter,
and "blending in" were properly achieved (see photographs).
All temporary Eco -Block shoring is geotechnically approved through this date
(March 2, 2007).
Foundation Bearing: This engineer verified dense, native sands easily providing
3,000 p.s.f. bearing capacity.
"OK" to proceed with foundation formwork, reinforcing steel and concrete
placement in accordance with City of Edmonds approved plans.
NOTE: Portions of the building footprint incorporate steps. It is essential that
these stepped areas utilize proper containment of the formwork to eliminate the
concrete "running out".
Subsurface Drainage: Not yet.
Retaining Wall 1 Rockery: Not yet.
• Erosion Control: Contractor has properly established a rocked construction
entrance and perimeter siltation fencing. All temporary erosion control measures
are functioning and approved through this date (March 2, 2007).
City of Edmonds Inspection and Testing Agreement: This engineer has advised
project owner (Joel Hadfield) and superintendent (Keith Launders) to fill out the
City of Edmonds testing forms for geotechnical services by D. Bruce, P.E.
SUMMARY:
• Project owner and contractor desired D. Bruce, P.E. to perform geotechnical
inspections.
• Previously submitted plans incorporated excavation "to close" to existing Hadfield
residence.
improved excavation designs incorporate temporary Eco -Block shoring to
minimize excavation proximity to existing residence.
Ongoing geotechnical inspections by D. Bruce, P.E. verified stability of the site
and proper performance to date.
Inspections continue.
