VdS Schadenverhutung GmbH UL Listing Category Sprinklers, Automatic & Open (VNIV) Quick Response Sprinkler Product Description Reliable Models F1 FR56, F1 FR42, F1 FRXLH & F1 FR28 Series Sprinklers are quick response sprinklers which combine the durability of a standard sprinkler with the attractive low profile of a decorative sprinkler. The Models F1 FR56, F1 FR42, F1 FRXLH & F1 FR28 Series Recessed automatic sprinklers utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers have demonstrat- ed response times in laboratory tests which are five to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This quick response enables the Model F1 FR56, F1 FR42, F1 FRXLH & F1 FR28 Series sprinklers to apply water to a fire much faster than standard sprinklers of the same temperature rating, The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a pre- cisely manufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially constructed to provide fast thermal response. Bulletin 014 Rev. I Model NF1 Fly Series Quick Response Standard Spray .. .. ....... The vapor phase can be seen as a small bub " w ble. As heat is applied, the liquid expands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liquid pressure XLH Recessed increases. Continued heating forces Pendent FP the liquid to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the waterway and allowing the deflec- tor to distribute the discharging water. The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., 103 Fairview Park Drive, Elmsford, New York 10523 Application Quick response sprinklers are used infixed fire protection systems: VVe1. Dry, Deluge or Pnaaohon. Cam must be oxomiomd that the orifice aize, temperature nting, deflector style and sprinkler type are in accordance with the latest published standards of the National Fire Protection Association or the approving Authority Having Jurisdiction. Application The Reliable Model G5-56 and G5-42 are the most versatile quick response concealed sprinklers available. It provides the best form of fire protection while offering an attractive ap- pearance and 3/4" (19mm) of cover adjustment for ease of installation. The small diameter cover plate assembly is eas- ily attached and blends into the ceiling, concealing the most dependable fire protection available, an automatic sprinkler system. The Model G5-56 and G5-42 are designed for use where aesthetic appearance is important. Offices, hospitals, motels and restaurants are but a few of the applications where it can be used. The Model G5-56 and G5-42 is a UL Listed Quick Response Concealed sprinklers intended for use in accordance with NFPA 13. FM Approves the G5-56 sprinkler as a standard re- sponse concealed sprinkler intended for use in accordance with FM Loss Prevention Data Sheet 2.0. Bulletin 034 Rev. A Model G5-56 Model G5-42 Quick Response Concealed Automatic Sprinkler Plain Cover Plate Perforated Cover Plate Product ri tion The Reliable Model G5-56 and G5-42 uses a proven quick response fusible element in a standard style sprinkler frame with a drop-down deflector. This assembly is recessed into the ceiling and concealed by a flat cover plate assembly, The threaded engagement provides 3/a" (19mm) of cover adjust- ment. The flat cover plate is attached to the skirt using either 135°F (57°C) or 165°F (74°C) ordinary temperature classifica- tion solder. When the ceiling temperature rises, the solder holding the flat cover plate melts, the flat cover plate released thus expos- ing the sprinkler inside to the rising ambient temperature. The subsequent fusing of the element opens the waterway and causes the deflector to distribute the water. Any secure engagement between the cover plate and cup will assure that the drop-down deflector is properly located below the ceiling. The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., 103 Fairview Park Drive, Elmsford, New York 10523 CD c O co G ME Installation Do not install the G5-56 and G5-42 in ceilings which have positive pressure in the space above. Cut a 25/" inch (67mm) diameter hole is cut in the ceiling, the sprinkler is easily installed with the Model FC Wrench. The wrench has a socket drive which is inserted into the body of the sprinkler. When installing a sprinkler the wrench is first positioned into the sprinkler/cup assembly until the wrench socket engages the body of the sprinkler. The sprinkler is then tightened into the pipe fitting. When inserting or remov- ing the wrench from the sprinkler/cup assembly, care should be taken to prevent damage to the sprinkler. DO NOT WRENCH ON ANY OTHER PART OF THE SPRINKLER/ CUP ASSEMBLY. Install the cover plate by hand turning the cover in the clockwise direction until it is tight against the ceil- ing. A protective cap is provided to protect the drop-down sprinkler deflector from damage which could occur during construction before the cover plate is installed. The cap is factory installed inside the sprinkler cup. Remove cap to install sprinkler, them re- install cap until the cover plate is installed. Maintenance The Model G5-56 and 35-42 should be inspected quarterly and the sprinkler system maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any other cleaning fluids. Remove any sprinkler that has been painted (other than factory applied) or damaged in any way. Residential sprinklers differ firorn standard sprinklers primarily in their resporrse time and water distribution patterns. Madel RFC43 and RFC49 sprinklers discharge water in a hemispherical pattern below' the sprinkler deflector. Residential distribution patterns are higher and generally contain a finer droplet size than standard sprinkler patterns. The combination of speed of operation and high discharge pattern required for residential sprinklers has dernoristrated, in fire testing, an ability for controlling residential fires, and thereby providing signifk acct evacuation t.irne for occupants, The RFC43 and Rl"D19 Sprinklers provide the best form c fire protection by cornbinng an attractive appearance acid !Xl!, (13airn) of cover adjustment for ease of installation. .p„re srnall diameter rover plate is easily and positively attached and blends into the ceiling, concealing the most dependable fire protection available, an automatic sprinkler system. The RFC43 and RFC49 are UL Listed Residential Sprinklers to be installed in the residential portions of any occupancy in accordance with NFPA 13,13R, & 13D. The RFC43 and RFC49 can reduce the need for precise cutting of drop nipplra & The threaded cover plate assembly can be ac;llusted without tools to fit accurately against the ceiling" ..t_h fire protection system need not be shut down lo adjust or remove the cover plate assernbly, Application and Installation The RFC43 and RFC49, for residential installations, use a 165°F (4`'"C) fusible solder Bunk in a tuning fork style, sprinkler frame with a drop-down deflector. This assembly is recessed into the ceiling ac rd concealed by a flat cover plate The cover plate is attached to the skirt, using 13,,,i",F (57`"C) ordinary lernperature clasasificatbn solder When the ceiling terr7l eratur"e rises, thescalcfler l cald'ir rctg the cover plate rete es the cover allowing the deflector to drop into position and The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., 103 Fairview Park Drive, Elmsford, New York 10523 exposing the spriinkler inside to caking temperature. The subsequent operation of the solder link opens It rua waterway and causes the defleclor to drop into position to distribute the discharging water in a hemispherical pattern below the sprinkler deflec x, Any adjustment of thread engagement between the cover plate and cup will assure that the drop-dowr'id0lector is property located below the ceiling. The residential distribution pattern contains a finer droplet size than a standard sprinkler', and the pattern produces significantly higher wall wetting. After a 2 5/8 inch diar°neler hole is cart in the ceiling, the sprir"alder is to be installed with the Model FC Wrench. This quick response enables these sprinklers to apply water to a fire much sooner than standard response sprinklers of the similar temperature rating. Model F3QR Dry Sprinklers are intended for use in dry and preac- tion systems and in areas subjected to freezing temperatures, such as freezers and unheated portions inside and outside buildings. Environments wherein dry sprinklers are employed can be cor- rosive. For this reason, Model F3 Sprinklers have a special wax fillet placed in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss. This wax will not interfere with the operation of the sprinkler, and it prevents contaminents from entering the internal portion of the drop nipple. The wax must not be removed. Operation The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a precisely manufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially constructed to provide fast thermal response. When the temperature increases sufficiently, due to a fire, the bulb shatters allowing operating parts to clear the waterway. Sprinkler Installation Wrench: Model G3 R/C Sprinkler Wrench Sprinkler Identification Number (SIN): R5734 Technical Data: Orifice Size:'/2" (15mm) Thread Size: 1" NPT per ANSI B2.1 Working Pressure: 175 psi (12 bar) Nominal K Factor - US / (Metric): 5.6 / (80) Product Description Reliable Model F3QR Dry Sprinklers are quick response sprinklers utilizing a durable 3mm frangible glass bulb. This enables the inlet seal to release air or water and subsequently, cause water flow over the deflector in a uniform spray pattern, controlling or extinguishing the fire. 5, Fig. 9 Listed by cULus for Quick Response. General Installation Instructions Model F30R dry sprinklers must be installed only in stan- dard (ANSI B 16.3 class 150 and ANSI B 16.4 class 125) pipe tees in the horizontal position, even at branch line ends. They should not be installed into elbows or pipe couplings located on drop nipples to the sprinklers. For these and other fittings including CPUC*, the dry sprinkler should be installed into a fitting to allow protrusion into the fitting in ac- cordance with the diagrams. The "A" dimension of the dry sprinkler, which extends into the freezers or a freezing zone from wet pipe systems, should be selected to provide, as a minimum, the specified lengths in inches shown in Fig. 10. Caution: Do not install Model F3QR Dry sprinklers into CPVC adapter fittings or tees that have an internal obstruction. This will damage the sprinkler and /or the fitting. Refer to Fig. 11. During installation, the following steps must be followed: 1. Cut the specified size hole (see illustrations) for the sprin- kler in the ceiling or wall directly in line with the tee. 2. Apply pipe joint compound to the 1" (25mm) pipe threads and install sprinkler using the Model G3 or G3 R/C Sprinkler Wrench as specified. 3. Install the Model FP push -on / thread -off escutcheon or CCP cover plate if required. Note: Installation of the Model F3QR Sprinklers is not rec- ommended in copper pipe systems, as this may reduce the life expectancy of the sprinklers. Model F3QR Concealed and Recessed In- stallation Instructions • The Model G3 R/C wrench (Fig. 12) is designed to locate on the wrenching pads of the recessed sprin- kler while centering in the cup. A standard 1/2" drive ratchet may be used to drive this wrench. Fig. 13 and Fig. 14 show sequentially the insertion of the wrench. First the wrench, with its jaws above the sprinkler de- flector, is moved laterally until centered with the cup. Then raise the wrench inside of the cup until its jaws engage the sprinkler's square wrenching pads (Fig. 14). To remove the wrench, follow this procedure in reverse order. Care should be taken to avoid striking the deflector, with the wrench. • Model G3 Wrench (Fig. 15) is used for installation of Pendent and Horizontal Sidewall sprinklers. • Glass bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to minimize bulb damage during shipping, handling and installation. REMOVE THIS PROTECTION AT THE TIME THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS PLACED IN SER- VICE FOR FIRE PROTECTION. Removal of the pro- tectors before this time may leave the bulb vulnerable to damage. RASCO wrenches are designed to install sprinklers when covers are in place. REMOVE PRO- TECTORS BY UNDOING THE CLASP BY HAND. DO NOT USE TOOLS TO REMOVE THE PROTECTORS. N Maintenance The Model F3QR Quick Response Dry Sprinklers should be inspected quarterly and the sprinkler system maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Do not remove the factory applied thermally sensitive wax fillet between the bulb sup- porting cup and the wrenching boss. Do not replace this wax with a substitute substance. An Alternate substance may interfere with proper operation of the sprinkler. Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any other cleaning fluids. Remove dust by using a soft brush or gently vacuuming. Remove any sprinkler which has been painted (other than factory applied) or damaged in any way. A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick replacement of damaged or operated sprinklers. Prior to installation, sprinklers should be maintained in the original cartons and packaging until used to minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers that would cause improper opera- tion or non -operation. kl% CIONAVIIl Ii I j t"'wjolLJNA, if, d4 J/dk, WC) P1 NMT I K "A' N) INCL I f " 11Rf 111. The trim set used with the Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve contains the Reli- able Model LP Dry Valve Actuator releasing device. This Actuator allows the system's air or nitrogen pressure re- quirement to be considerably less than the available water supply pressure (see Table A). The following benefits are a direct result of lower air pressure: 1 In refrigerated area systems, lower air pressure de- creases the possibility of ice plugs, which could im- pede or prevent the flow of water to sprinkler heads in the event of fire. 2 Lower air pressure (volume) will enable smaller ca- pacity, lower cost dehydration equipment when it is required. 3 Lower air or nitrogen pressure can reduce water deliv- ery time when the system actuates, and in some cases, may eliminate the need for an accelerator. 4 Low pressure requirements make the use of dry nitro- gen gas, instead of air, practical even on larger sys- tems. Resulting benefits include a lower -than -air dew point, which minimizes ice plugging of system lines, and enhances "user friendliness" during installation and operation. 5 System maintenance is simplified since priming water is not required and the Dry Pipe Valve can be reset externally without cover removal. This is accomplished by pushing in and turning the external reset knob at the rear of the Dry Pipe Valve (see Fig.1). This feature pro- vides a significant system -restoration time advantage. The Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve's trim set (see Fig.2) provides all of the necessary equipment for connections to the pushrod chamber's inlet and outlet ports, the 1'/4" (30mm) or 2" (50mm) main drain, alarm devices, air sup- ply, water supply and required pressure gauges. This trim set is available in individual parts, in time -saving, segmen- tally assembled kit forms, or fully assembled to the Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve (with or without a control valve). All the sizes of the Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve trim sets may be equipped with the optional Reliable Model B1 Accelerator, trim kit P/N 6516000003, (see Figs. 2 & 3). This device acts as an exhauster which will hasten the op- eration of the Model LDX Dry Valve Actuator and minimize the water delivery time for the entire system. System Operation The Reliable Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve is shown in both closed and open positions in Fig. 1. In the closed position, the supply pressure acts on the underside of the clapper and also on the push rod through the push rod chamber's inlet restriction. The resultant force due to the supply pressure acting on the push rod is multiplied by the mechanical advantage of the lever and is more than sufficient to hold the clapper closed against normal supply pressure surges. 3, When a sprinkler operates, there will be a loss of air or nitrogen pressure in the sprinkler system's piping which will cause the Model LP Dry Valve Actuator to open. The opening of this device allows a releasing discharge of wa- ter from the pushrod chamber's outlet connection. Since the pressure cannot be replenished through the inlet re- striction as rapidly as it is vented, the push rod chamber pressure falls instantaneously. When the push rod cham- ber pressure approaches approximately one-third of the supply pressure, the upward force of the supply pressure acting beneath the clapper overcomes the lever -applied force thereby opening the clapper. Once the clapper has opened, the lever acts as a latch, preventing the clapper from returning to the closed po- sition. Water from the supply flows through the Dry Pipe Valve into the system piping. Water also flows through the Dry Pipe Valve's alarm outlet to the alarm devices. After system shutdown, resetting the Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve is quite simple. Doing so only requires push- ing in and turning the reset knob at the rear of the valve (see Fig. 1). The external reset feature of the Model DDX- LP Dry Pipe Valve provides a means for simple, economi- cal system testing, which is one essential facet of a good maintenance program. The external reset feature does not, however, eliminate another important facet of good maintenance, namely, periodic cleaning and inspection of the internal valve parts. In the event that water builds up inside the valve due to condensate from the air supply system or water left inside from valve system testing, a drain is available for venting. After closing the main supply valve, a small valve over the drain cup can be opened slightly until the water inside the valve body and the main pipe column has drained. The Model B Manual Emergency Station is also included in the Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve trim set. It consists of an aluminum nameplate mechanically attached to a ball valve. The valve handle in its OFF position is guarded against accidental turning to the ON position (and system discharge) by a nylon cable tie provided with each trim kit. The cable tie is inserted after the system has been re- stored for operation. The nylon cable tie is designed to al- low, in case of an emergency, forceful turning of the valve handle to the ON position. As an alternative to the Model B Hydraulic Manual Emergency Station, the Model A Hy- draulic Manual Emergency Pull Box (see Reliable Bulletin 506) is also available and can be provided as an option. Whenever ambient temperature conditions are high, the water temperature in the Model DDX-LP Dry Pipe Valve's pushrod chamber could possibly increase, thereby in- creasing the pressure in the chamber to values exceed- ing the rated pressure of the system. In an indoor installa- tion where standard room temperatures are exceeded, a pressure relief kit may be needed. Pressure relief kit, P/N 6503050001, can be installed into the pushrod chamber's releasing line to limit the pressure to 250 psi (17,2 bar). Hydrostatic tinValves and DDX Systems As required by NFPA 13, fire sprinkler systems with working pressures up to and including 150 psi are to be hydrostatically tested at a water pressure of 200 psi and maintain that pressure without loss for two hours. Fire sprinkler systems with working pressures above 150 psi are required to be hydrostatically tested at 50 psi above the system working pressure and maintain that pressure without loss for two hours. In addition to the hydrostatic tests described above, dry pipe and double interlock pre - action systems require an additional low pressure air test. In some cases, hydrostatic testing (in accordance with the NFPA 13 requirements noted above) will result in pres- sures that exceed the working Pressure of the valve and trim kit for the two-hour test period. .:jg_ Ive and a )[ 1111 , Kit 9 Hsted under ( :h.11aDt1tllg in acr.atl-. Table A specifies the air or nitrogen pressure level to be applied to the Actuator. Optional Reliable Model A-2 Pres- sure Maintenance Device (see Reliable Bulletins 254) au- tomatically provides a safeguard against pressure leaks in the sprinkler piping, and properly restricts the flow of makeup air. When the optional Model B1 Accelerator is used, a Model A-2 Pressure Maintenance Device and a 7. tank -mounted air compressor are required. Also, when a Model 131 Accelerator is used, to expedite water -delivery time, the pneumatic pressure must not be less than 15 psi (1,0 bar). Whenever multiple dry systems are installed at the same location, each dry system is to have its own Model A-2 Pressure Maintenance Device installed for individual maintenance of air pressure (Refer to the 2007 Edition of NFPA 13, section 7.2.6.5.3). Figure 1) are indicat- ing type valves designed for use in fire protection systems where a visual in- dication is required as to whether the valve is open or closed. They are used, for example, as system, sectional, and pump water control valves. They have cut groove inlet and outlet connections that are suitable for use with grooved end pipe couplings that are listed and approved for fire protection systems. For applications requiring supervision of the open position of the valve, the Gear Operators for the Model BFV-N Butterfly Valves are provided with two sets of factory installed internal switches each having SPDT contacts. The supervisory switches transfer their electrical contacts when there is move- ment from the valve's normal open po- sition during the first two revolutions of the handwheel. WARNINGS The Model BFV-N Grooved End But- terfly Valves described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authori- ties having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. These properties can however be compromised if the CPVC pipe comes in contact with incompatible chemicals found in some construction products. One area where these incompatibilities can be found is in firestopping sealants. Certain firestopping sealants within the industry contain chemicals that are incompatible with CPVC piping systems. These chemicals can cause the wall of the CPVC pipe to weaken and may even cause environmental stress fractures. BlazeMaster° Caulk & Walk° is a specially formulated firestopping sealant made to ensure that a chemically induced failure will not occur when used with BlazeMaster° CPVC fire sprinkler systems.
