deferred submittal request.pdf
Im a bit confused about maintaining consistency with previous reviews when none have proceeded the one completed
on October 19, 2015.
It is not uncommon to have deferred submittals for systems and features to be installed within a structure after
construction has started. However, the allowance for them is typically governed by an assurance, as represented on the
plans, that the work to be done can be performed without significant alterations/modifications of the structure to
accommodate it. This avoids unnecessary construction delays due to re-configuration of significant structural
elements. It appears that the 4x4 posts supporting the floor framing loads at the main and upper levels could be
affected by a re-sizing of the elevator shafts, requiring those loads to be supported by other unplanned means. Waiting
until the moment before a framing inspection to address such changes usually results in requests for concessions by the
City for cobbled-together work because it was too difficult/costly.
It appears that you may have a little room on the fire-resistance rated common-wall side of the elevator shafts to gain
some of the required space to accommodate the size of elevator car required by ICC/A117.1-2009 section 408.4 But since
the indicated elevator car and lift mechanism is merely a representation of a proposed installation, even that may be in
question. Past experience has shown that elevator installations have very specific placement requirements for load-
carrying elements and operating equipment. With that in mind, and for the concerns noted above, the Building Division
requires construction documents that clearly represents the work to be done to guide proper review, construction and
inspection.
Chuck,
We are getting ready to submit the revisions to the building department review for this project. In the section
related to the elevators we were asked to provide specifications for the elevator and installation to meet the
requirement of ICC A117.1-2009 section 408.4.
To be consistent with previous reviews, we would like to submit these details once the elevator has been
selected. Can we do this as a condition on the plans saying that framing inspection will not be allowed until the
elevator details have been approved by the building department? This will really help as it will take some time
to do this and we want to keep this moving forward without this delay.
Thank you for the consideration,
John
