RE: Permit #b1d20070439, 8710 Main St
Request to Exceed Driveway Slope of 14'Yo
Ffcath,
GARY HAAKENSON
MAYOR
This letter is being sent in response to your request to exceed the maximum allowed
driveway slope of 14% for some areas and 20% in one isolated area, received July 7,
2008.
During an engineering final inspection on July 3, 2008, it was identified that portions of
the driveway were not consistent with the slope requirements outlined in the Edmonds
Community Development Code (ECDC).
The slope of the driveway between the upper parking area and the back of the sidewalk is
between 14% and 19%. The upper driveway area was constructed with minimal slope to
create a safe parking area and to allow impervious surface runoff to drain to the storm
detention system.
There is a small 8 -foot by 15 -foot isolated section of the driveway on the east side of the
driveway entrance at the back of the sidewalk that exceeds 20% slope. It is understood
the slope of the existing city street and sidewalk and the need to meet ADA requirements
along the sidewalk did not allow for construction of a driveway with slopes consistent
with the requirements outlined in the ECDC.
Per ECDC 18,80.060, it is stated:
1. The driveway will not present a traffic, pedestrian, bicycle or safety hazard,
2. The public health, safety and general welfare will not be adversely affected,
Incorporated AUqUSt fl, 1890
Sister City - Fleldnan, Japan
City staff has determined that both of these requirements have been met and that
alteration of the driveway would place a greater cross slope on the public walkway and
would create a situation in which public safety would be adversely affected.
For these reasons your driveway will be allowed to remain as constructed, with a slope of
22% for the small isolated section and a maximum slope of 19% for the middle section of
the driveway.
Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to request a variance for the'ramayo property at 8710 Main Street,
Edmonds, parcel number 00373600500301. This request is for grade of driveway which
exceeds the 14% in one small section of driveway. This section is approximately 8 by 15
feet in size and has a percentage of grade at 21.8%.
The circumstances for this are two fold. 1. The new driveway was pitched back towards
the storm water retention vaults to capture as much water from the driveway as possible.
2. The driveway exits from the home onto Main Street. With Main Street's grade
flowing down hill from the residence we were required by the city engineering
department to follow the natural slope of the existing sidewalk when we replaced the
approach which made the one section of the drive slightly steeper.
