A Krazan geotechnical representative visited the site today to observe rockery construction.
Rockery Construction
A contractor was constructing a rockery in the northeastern portion of the property. The bottom row of rocks
had been placed in the western portion of the rockery alignment, and a drainage system was being installed
behind the rockery face.
The drainage system generally consisted of a 6-inch diameter perforated PVC pipe surrounded by washed
drain rock and filter fabric. The fabric was also placed along the back of the rockery cut. We were informed
that the drain pipe was connected to an existing catch basin at the western end of the rockery.
It is our understanding that the City of Edmonds has requested an inspection of rockery construction, including
rockery height, subgrade materials, and rock size (per City of Edmonds Standard Rockery Detail, drawing
number E8.9, dated 9/9/05).
Rockery Height: We were informed that the rockery will be approximately 3 to 4 feet in height. The eastern
end of the rockery will be two -tiered, including a horizontal bench and short second -tier rockery.
Subgrade Materials: Subgrade soils consisted of brown sand and silty sand with gravel. We evaluated the
subgrade soils in the rockery alignment and in front of the already -placed rocks using a 1/2-inch diameter steel
T-probe. The soils were probed approximately 1 to 3 inches, indicating medium dense to dense conditions.
Rock Size: We measured the bottom rock size in the western portion of the rockery. The rocks were
approximately 3 to 4 feet long parallel to the rockery alignment, and about 2 to 3 feet wide perpendicular to the
rockery alignment.
