Dear IVir_ I-lenricks:
Subiect: Evaluation of Stairways Setback
Renovation of Single -Family Residence
8711 Talbot load
Edmonds, Wasbirigton
L&A Job No. 5A118
We understand. that the proposed renovation for the subject residence will include construction of
a concrete patio and stairways abutting the rear of the hoose, and tlxat the stairways will be set
back about 30 to 35 feet from the crest of the steep bluff bordering the west side of the residence
site. l't'esented in this letter .is our opinion regarding the adequacy of this setback.
As presented in our 9/12/2005 report, the hillside on top of which the residence site is located is
formed at shallow depth by veiy-dense fresh till soils of high shear strength and excellent
resistance against slope failures. It is, therefore, our opinion if the proposed patio and stairways
are set back at least 20 feet from the top of bluff of slope 40% or more, they should have no
impact on the stability of the bluff. It should be rioted, however, that the foundations supporting
the stairways should be embedded at least b inches into the very -dense fresh till soils.
Please call if you have any questions.
