We supplied a fabricated skylight frame to replace an existing rusted and deteriorated frame
with single glazed obscure wire glass. Wire glass is no longer available. We fabricated a new
frame to match the existing frame for historic visual appearance.
The existing skylight also had a ventilation hood to provide ventilation to an air shaft below the
skylight. We also built a new ventilation hood and installed an exhaust fan to help assist air
movement.
For the purpose of closely matching the appearance of the original skylight and glazing, we
furnished acid etch tempered glass over clear laminated glass. The new skylight matches as
close as possible the visual appearance of the original skylight.
On completion of this restoration, we were told this has to meet WSEC code 402.4.3 . The
energy code regulating skylights.
The glass values of the glazing we supplied are:
Visible light transmissions 79%
u-value (winter nighttime) 0.47
SHGC 0.76
Existing glass meets the energy code, except shading.
The WSEC code 402.4.3 SHCG is .35 . The only way of achieving this level of shading is to
use reflective or tinted glass on the outboard light of insulated glass. These types of glazing
would not have the historic appearance of the existing glazing we supplied.
Perhaps the City of Edmonds will wave this shade requirement for historical reasons and that
this skylight is not over an inhabited space. This skylight is over an air shaft and serves a
mechanical purpose to the building.
