What is required for the the walk in fridge mechanical permit? I'm having trouble locating relevant fields in the WSEC compliance worksheet. Is that required for an indoor refrigeration unit? The UL 710 hood maybe installed per the listing and, in addition to IMC 507.5, is not required to comply with the other sections noted in IMC 507.1, Exception 1. Unfortunately, the `real world' conditions of the installation are quite different than that of the testing environment for the listing, usually requiring additional measures to operate effectively. The true test of the effectiveness is the IMC 507.6.1 `capture and containment test', required for all Type I hood installations, including those listed and labeled in accordance with UL 710. The makeup air requirements of IMC 508 still must be met. There needs to be information provided in written form that indicates the proposed method(s) of providing the minimum 1600 CFM exhaust and the equivalent amount of tempered makeup air. The original submittal indicated a 1600 CFM Type I hood/exhaust fan and a 720 CFM makeup air unit from EconAir. I informed you that additional makeup air was required so that provided would be approximately equal to the amount of exhaust per IMC 508.1. The options of adding a ducted gravity opening with a duct heater or to upsize/add to the originally proposed 720 CFM was mentioned by me at that time. I later received from you a specification sheet from CaptiveAire that proposed a 900 CFM fan serving the hood along with a 900 CFM makeup air unit. While the amount of makeup air is now equivalent to that of the exhaust, the amount of exhaust air provided by the CaptiveAire unit does not meet the minimum required per IMC 507.5.2. To clarify, I made comments on the specification sheet (see attached) asking if only the CaptiveAire makeup air unit was to be installed, or was it being added to the originally proposed EconAir unit. I also asked if the exhaust fan noted on the specification sheet was to be installed instead of the originally proposed EconAir unit. To date, the submitted information (each part or as a whole) does not clearly indicate how the minimum required 1600 CFM exhaust and the equivalent amount of tempered makeup air will be provided. The proposed size of the makeup air fan is quite a bit low — it doesn't comply with International Mechanical Code (IMC) 508.1. While it's pretty common to slightly undersize the makeup air to ensure `capture and containment' at the hood, typically nothing more than 10% is acceptable.
