PO box 50393 Bellevue, WA 98015 Subject: Tree Replacement 303 5'h Ave S, Edmonds Mr. Maize, The planning division has reviewed the proposal to replace the two sweet gum trees (Liquidambar styraciflua) at 303 51h Avenue South with two vine maple trees (Ater circinatum). The City does not feel vine maple would be an appropriate replacement tree. Sweet gum can grow to 60 feet tall with a spread of 20 — 25 feet. Vine maples are usually multi -stemmed trees, which when grown in the open, can grow to 35 feet. A more appropriate replacement tree would be a species selected from the City of Edmonds Street Tree Plan. I would suggest one of two varieties of red maple (Ater rubrum). The Street Tree Plan identifies Scarlet Sentinel as the street tree along Main Street and is planted in front of the building. Planting two more along the side would provide consistent landscaping around the building. Additionally, Scarlet Sentinel is more comparable in size to sweet gum which can grow to 40 feet in height with a 25 foot spread and do not have the aggressive root system of sweet gum trees. Another option is the Bowhall maple which has a more narrow spread at 15 feet and is the street tree identified for Dayton Street. Please revise the plan to include one of the species identified above, or suggest another more appropriate replacement tree (preferably from the attached street tree list). Also please identify the size of the replacement trees. Pursuant to ECDC 20.13.015.B, deciduous replacement trees should have a mill inunn caliper of one and one half inch.
