RE: PLAN REVIEW COMMENTS FOR PLAN CHECK #BLD20170497
TH
PEDESTRIAN SIGN AT 505—5 AVE. S. #104.
Dear Ms. Rosenfelt:
Thank you for submitting a permit application for your pedestrian sign. We appreciate your efforts to come
into compliance with the revised sign code.
I have reviewed the above building permit application for the Planning Division, and found that the following
information, corrections, or clarifications need to be addressed before we can complete our review:
1.
Sign Area: Dimensions included with your pedestrian sign application are 24-inches wide by 47-inches
tall, approximately 7.83-sf. However, pursuant to Edmonds Community and Development Code
(ECDC) 20.60.055(7)(a), pedestrian signs are limited to a maximum of six-square-feet in area, including
no more than two and one-half feet in width and three and one-half feet in height. The proposed sign
exceeds the maximum allowed square footage and maximum height. Please change the size of the
proposed signage to meet maximum allowed dimensions and sign area. Also, since this is a maximum
size and the proposed location is near an intersection, the sign’s height may need to be less. (See
“Alternative Placement” below.)
2.
Alternative Placement: The proposed sign location requires Director approval. Pursuant to ECDC
20.60.055(A)(3), the Development Services Director may approve an alternative location under the
following circumstances:
a)An alternative location in front of the building or on the property occupied by the business is
less intrusive to pedestrian movement or accessibility; or
b)The building containing the business is set back from the property line and a location on the
property can be provided such that the sign does not encroach onto a public sidewalk.
Since the proposed location is not located on private property per criterion (b), an alternative location
must be approved under 20.60.055(A)(3)(a). Please provide a letter that the Director may review, stating
how the proposed location meets this criterion. The Director’s approval may include a condition, if
warranted, about the sign height for this particular location.
Please submit the requested information to a Development Services Permit Coordinator. Our office hours are
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 8:00 am 4:30 pm, and Wednesdays 8:30 am to noon.
If you have questions, feel free to contact me at (425)771-0220 ext. 1367 or brad.shipley@edmondswa.gov.
Sincerely,
Brad Shipley, Associate Planner, Development Services Department – Planning Division
