The following is in response to your correction checklist dated July 7, 2014. Please find
listed below our itemized responses:
1. It appears the CIRCULATION HALLS serve as CORRIDORS by IBC 4-7.2 definition.
Explain how unrated assemblies without self -or automatic -closing features used in
CORRIDORS doors "provide and effective barrier to limit the transfer of smoke"?
(Bjorback #2)
R i SPONSE: Per section 407 Group 1.2 407.2 reads, "Corridors in occupancies in Group I-2
shall be continuous to the exits and shall be separate from other areas in accordance with
Section 407.3 except spaces 'conforming to Sections 407.2, l through 407.2.4. " 407.2.1 reads as
follows. " Waiting and Similar Areas. Waiting areas and similar spaces constructed as required
for corridors shall be permitted to be open to a corridor only where all of the following criteria
are met.
1. The spaces are not occupied as care recipient's sleeping rooms,, treatment rooms,
incidental uses in accordance with Section 509, or hazardous uses.
2. The open space is protected by an automatic fire detection system installed in accordance
with section 907.
3. The corridors onto which the spaces open, in the same smoke compartment, are protected
by an automatic fire detection system installed in accordance With Section 907, or the
smoke compartment in which the spaces are located is equipped throughout with quick -
response sprinklers in accordance with Section 903.3.2
4. The space is arranges so as not to obstruct access to the required exits. "
We feel that the .Multi -Purpose and Dining space meet the Siniflar areas under section 4072.1
and we do meet all the requirements of items 1-4 noted above. Please see the updated sheet A-
10 where we clearly show the lire partition wall locations around the dining room and multi-

purpose space. The commentary also seems to support these spaces being open to the corridor.
It notes the following, " To address the various operational requirements of occupancies
classified as Group 12, the code includes provisions that both permit various areas to be open to
corridors and address suite arrangements of the exit access portions of the facilities. " It also
notes the following, "Areas similar to waiting rooms could include common visiting areas,
reception or information stations and patient check in stations. " We feel this meets the intent of
this code section.
2. It appears that fire alarm system plans will be designated with corridor; areas open to
corridor; living units for automatic smoke detection due to omission of living unit smoke
alarms. Describe your intent for automatic smoke detection in corridors and living units or

the system.
