During the 2021 113C: code hearings, a specific allowance in 1Bl )I U.2 was proposed to avow wood stair construction and was unanimously approved. It still has to go through the public comment hearing this fall. At the same time, the proposal was also submitted to the Washington State Building Code Council as an amendment to that section in the 2018 IBC. The approach has been utilized for many projects in Bellevue under a policy developed by their Building Official, The portion of the stairway in the IA portion below the `podium line' must be enclosed by 3-hour fire - resistance rated construction with opening protectives in accordance with IBC 716. The VA portion of the interior exit stairway above the 'podium line' must be enclosed by 2-hour fire -resistance rated construction with opening protectives in accordance with IBC 716. My apologies for the delayed response.
