SHC City letter dated 5-24-07.pdf.lnc.IS911 CITY OF EDMONDS 121 5TH AVENUE NORTH • EDMONDS, WA 98020 • (425) 771-0220 • FAX (425) 771-0221 Website: www.ci.edmonds.wa.us DEVELOPMENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT Planning • Building - Engineering Mr. Rick Grimes, AIA Freiheit & Ho 10230 Northeast Points Drive, Suite 300 Kirkland, Washington 98033 RE: Stevens Health Care Center Request for Alternate Design HVAC Equipment within a Corridor Dear Mr. Grimes, GARY HAAKENSON MAYOR May 24, 2007 The City is in receipt of your request for Alternate Design; the submittal includes your letter dated April 17, 2007, a corridor detail dated May 23, 2007, a letter from ABSCO Alarms dated April 16, 2007 with corresponding fire alarm system upgrade plans and a letter from ACCO Engineered Systems the Mechanical Engineer of Record dated May 22, 2007. The owners of the building voluntarily approached the City once the non -conforming corridor condition was brought to their attention and as responsible owners they desire to provide corridor protection to all building occupants and the City commends their actions to date. In reviewing the request it is apparent that the existing physical dimensions and obstacles within the plenum area above the corridor prohibit strict compliance to international Building Code Section 1016.4 and International Mechanical Code 601.2 (WAC Amendment). The proposal to use interconnected fire/smoke dampers as an early detection measure together with complying elements of corridor construction address the issue of code equivalency. Therefore, it is my determination as Building Official for the City of Edmonds the alternate design request is hereby APPROVED with the following conditions: Mechanical permit application #2006-1088 must be obtained, plans shall clearly show the relocation and alteration of the HVAC heat pump units and associated duct work within the corridor, including installation of fire/smoke dampers on both supply and return air systems. Fire Alarm permit application #2007-0258 must be obtained, (the City shall process the plans dated 5/4/07 as a resubmittal to the permit application). At the end of the project, as -built plans shall be provided to reflect any heat pumps/damper locations that are adjusted during implementation as well as updated zone maps to reflect any shift in position. Sincerely,] Jeannine L. Graf, C.B.O. Building Official Cc: Mike Smith, Senior Fire Inspector • Incorporated August 11, 1890 •
