Subject: Alternative Design (2003 UBC Section 104.11) Limiting Occupant Load
Dear Ms. Bullis:
We request approval of alternative design as permitted by 2003 UBC Section 104.11. The
proposed method will meet the intent of the provisions of this code and will provide a safe
environment for the occupants.
1. The provision of IBC 2006 Section 1004.1.1. Exceptions, allow limiting occupant load less
than that calculated by area. We request that the occupant load for four classrooms
(H8, H10, H16, H19), with occupant loads of 51 (3) and 54 (1) be posted for a maximum
occupancy of 49. This request would remove the requirement for two doors from these
classrooms.
The program for the Scriber Lake High School/Options Interim Site includes a total of
363 students and staff. The maximum anticipated classroom size is 22 students and two
staff. See attached letter from Dawn Hart, Assistant Principal, Scriber Lake High
School.
2. We also request that the occupant load for Staff Lounge H13 be posted for a maximum
number of occupants of 49. The measured area is 1,4888 square feet and if calculated
using 15 square feet per occupant, 99 occupants be used for exiting. There is a total staff
of 57 for the Scriber Lake/Options programs.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter. We are trying to provide a safe and
comfortable environment for the students and staff. Please call with any questions.
