RE: Alternate Design Request/Old Milltown/Heavy Timber Columns
Dear Mr. Allen,
The City is in receipt of your request for Alternate Design (received by the City on July
2, 2007) for the Old Milltown building located at 201 5t' Avenue South, for acceptance of
heavy timber columns as equivalent for Type VA construction.
In reviewing the request it is noted that the size of the proposed columns (8"x8") is
consistent with the provisions of the 2003 edition of the International Building Code
Section 602.4.1 for Heavy Timber construction which states....'wood columns shall be
sawn or glued laminated and shall not be less than 8 inches nominal, in any dimension
where supporting floor loads and not less than 6 inches nominal in width and not less
than 8 inches nominal in depth where supporting roof and ceiling loads only.'
The request is hereby Approved with the following provisions:
• All columns within the fire rated corridor shall be individually protected to one
hour fire resistive construction, and
• Columns within any concealed space shall be individually protected to one hour
fire resistive construction for that portion that is concealed
Sincerely,
Jeannine L. Graf
