Re: 16 ornamental Flowering Plum trees (Prunus cerasifera)
Assignment:
Provide the City of Edmonds with documentation and recommendations for the removal and
replacement of row of small trees.
Discussion (please reference attached photos and site maps):
There are 16 Flowering Plum trees in a row along 104th Ave W. They are approximately 60 years
old. Most the trees have major dieback and decay in the main stem. There is one that has failed
completely and is a stump sprout. One tree is dead. These trees are short lived and have
reached the end of their life span. No pruning or other arboricultural practice would improve
their health or landscape value.
Proposed:
Remove the trees and stumps. Replace one to one with 16 Showtime Crabapple (Malus X
Showtime) at 1.5" caliper. New trees will be installed in the same place as the existing trees.
Procedure:
To evaluate and to prepare the report we drew upon our 15 plus years of experience in the field
and our formal education in Forestry and Horticulture. We also followed the protocol of the
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) for tree risk assessment while looking at the overall
health of the trees and site conditions.
In examining each tree, we look at such factors as:
-size
-vigor
-crown health
-deadwood and hanging branches
-pest and disease
