FIRE SPRINKLER CORPORATION "THE INCH" RESIDENTIAL AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS MODEL GL4906 ONE INCH ADJUSTABLE FLAT PLATE CONCEALED PENDENT DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The Globe Model GL4906 Residential One Inch Adjustable Concealed Pendent Sprinkler has a flat plate profile that utilizes 3mm frangible glass ampule as the thermosensitive element. Itfeatures economy, aesthetics and the lowest allowable water flowwith a nominal 1"of adjustment for easier installation. The combination of the 3mm frangible glass ampule and specially designed deflector make the Model GL4906 the ultimate in life safety and fire control. It has met the strict requirements of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. as described in UL Standard,1626, for Residential Sprinklers for Fire Protection Service, and should be used accordingly. This sprinkler should also be installed in accordance with the appropriate NFPA Standard 13, 13D or 13R and under the direction of the approving authorities having jurisdiction. All that is seen at the ceiling is the 3 5/16" diameter flat ceiling plate color finished to match the specifier's exact requirements. The ceiling plate is soldered to the sprinkler's special upper support assembly in three places. Upon the application of sufficient heat, the plate falls to the floor exposing the residential pendent spray sprinkler. Atthe prescribed temperature the internal pressure within the ampule exceeds the strength of the glass causing the glass bulb to shatter. This results in water discharge which is distributed in an approved pattern. SEPTEMBER 2011 Page 2 BULLETIN R.S.I.G., REV. #15 wAkw Oman ummm a r FIRE SPRINKLER CORPORATION RESIDENTIAL AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS MODEL GL4231 HORIZONTAL SIDEWALL RECESSED HORIZONTAL SIDEWALL DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The Globe Model GL4231 Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers have a durable design which utilizes a 3mm frangible glass ampule as the thermosensitive element. They feature econ- omy, aesthetics and low flow. The combination of the 3mm frangible glass ampule and specially designed deflector make the Model GL4231 Sprinklers the ultimate in life safety and fire control. These Globe Horizontal Sidewall and Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Residential Sprinklers have met the strict requirements of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. as described in the UL Standard for Residential Sprinklers for Fire Protection Service, UL 1626, and should be used accordingly. These sprin- klers should also be installed in accordance with the appropriate NFPA Standard 13, 13D or 13R and under the direction of the ap- proving authorities having jurisdiction. The heart of Globe's Model GL4231 sprinklers proven actuating assembly is a hermetically sealed frangible glass ampule that con- tains a precisely measured amount of fluid. When heat is absorbed, the liquid within the bulb expands increasing the internal pressure. At the prescribed temperature the internal pressure within the ampule exceeds the strength of the glass causing the glass to shatter. This results in water discharge which isdistributed in an approved pattern. The sprinkler and escutcheon are not factory assembled. Assembly is done in the field. Pipe friction loss calculations must be made according to NFPA Standard 13. The following table shows the allowance for friction loss for fittings, expressed as equivalent length of pipe. For additional information regarding friction loss, contact Spears®. Spears® recommends use of hangers that are designed and listed for supporting the CPVC Fire Sprinkler pipe. However, some hangers designed for steel pipe may be used if their suitability is clearly established. These hangers must have a minimum 1/24nch, load -bearing surface, and they must be selected to accommodate the specific pipe size. In addition, they cannot contain rough or sharp edges that contactthe pipe, and they must not bind the pipe from axial movement. Vertical runs must be supported so that the weight of the run is not on a fitting or a joint. Horizontal runs must be braced so that the stress loads (caused by bending or snaking pipe) will not be placed on a fitting or a joint. Support spacing is shown in the following table. See °Snaking/Deflection of Pipe" in this manual for information regarding bending or snaking CPVC Fire Sprinkler Pipe, Pipe Size Nominal inches Maximum Support Spacing feet (meters) Wt. CAUTION: DO NOT use hanger items such as plumber's tape or 'nail -on" devices. Pipe hanger must comply with NFPA 13,13D and 13R. When a sprinkler head activates, a significant reactive force can be exerted on the pipe. With a pendent head, this reactive force can cause the pipe to lift vertically if it is not secured properly, especially if the sprinkler drop is from small diameter pipe. The pipe must be braced against the vertical lift -up with the closest hanger. Refer to the following illustration and Table A & B.
