Comments:
MTC visited the site as requested by the client to observe subgrade conditions for the new retaining wall footing, and to
verify pin pile installation to refusal.
At this time, the contractor had excavated for the new block wall foundation from the overhanging area of structure south
to the end of the wall extending along the exterior patio south of the house. Exposed soils at the cut elevation consisted
of either intact native glacial till, generally light brown silty sand with gravel, or recompacted native silty sand
overburden oils of similar content. Conditions were as anticipated per the geotech report but varying locally in terms of
depth to till.
The contractor installed a series of eleven 63" x 2" steel pin piles along the West half of the retaining wall footprint as
added support which were driven partially through the till subgrade (based on embed depths). MTC observed the
contractor proof -test these piles by redriving to verify refusal criteria were met. A hand -operated pneumatic hammer was
used at full force. Less than one inch of penetration was observed for 60 seconds of sustained driving, consistent with
the recommended and typical refusal criteria for the pile size and capacity required. Approximate pile embedment (from
prepared grade) as determined by the contractor's information and direct measurements is recorded below listed E to W:
1. 55"
2. 53"
3. 29"
4. 24"
5. 44"
6. 19"
7. 25"
8. 37"
9. 50"
10. 49"
11. 27"
To the best of MTC inspector's knowledge, the above -described work was performed in general accordance with project
specifications and approved plans.
