Upon arriving to the site we met with Ross the landscape contractor to discuss plans. We were informed the contractors were in the process of excavating foundation lines for the proposed retaining walls around the perimeter of the new elevated paver patio area. Upon reaching subgrade elevation or below for the northern and eastern portions of the proposed retaining wall, we were informed that loose saturated soils were encountered. We observed that the northern and eastern retaining wall alignments were excavated approximately 5- feet and 2- to 3-feet below the adjacent existing grade, respectively, while the western excavation was not yet finished. We evaluated the base of excavations along the northern and eastern proposed retaining wall alignments with a 1/2 diameter steel probe rod under moderate pressure. We were generally able to probe 3- to 5-inches along the eastern line and 18- to 24-inches along the lower northern excavation, which we interpreted as loose to medium dense and loose, respectively. We observed the sidewalls and base of the excavations and observed dark brown undocumented fill soils underlain by gray sandy materials at the base, which we interpreted as native soils. We also observed significant groundwater seeping into the lower northern excavation. Due to the loose soils encountered at roughly subgrade or below we recommended the contractors place a minimum of 2-feet of 2- to 4-inch quarry spalls within the base of the existing approximately 5-foot overexcavation trench along the northern portion of the wall and compact to a firm and unyielding state. We recommended the span reinforced base extend a minimum of 1-foot outside of the wall base on either side. Similarly, we recommended overexcavating the eastern and western retaining wall alignments a minimum of 1-foot and replacement with 1.25-inch minus crushed rock due to the lack of groundwater seepage water and relatively higher density. The contractor agreed with the recommendations. Upon arriving to the site we met with Ross the landscape contractor to discuss plans. We were informed the northern retaining wall alignment excavation was filled with the recommended 2-feet of spalls spanning a zone approximately 7-feet wide (north -south) along with 1.25 inch minus crushed rock to fill the excavation back to grade (approximately 3-feet). Additionally, we were informed that all of the undocumented fill soils in the backfill zone behind the planned walls were removed and approximately 18 -inches of type 17 structural fill was placed, such that the backfill zone and base of wall elevation were roughly equal. We were also informed the block wall would be constructed with Baslite Geowall Pro blocks and Miragrid 5XT geogrid placed 16- and 32-inches up from the base of the wall. We evaluated the surface of the fill placed within the northern wall alignment and the backfill zone with a 1/2-inch diameter steel probe rod. We were generally able to probe 1- to 2-inches wluch we interpreted as medium dense or better conditions. We observed that the materials were compacted with large walk - behind vibratory plate compactors. We also performed in -place nuclear densometer tests on the type 17 backfill behind the proposed walls and obtained results greater than or equal to 95 percent compaction per ASTM D 1557 as shown on the attached density tests results sheet. Based on the results of our in - place density tests and probing evaluation it is our opinion that the backfill materials were placed and compacted adequately. We will return to the site to evaluate the remaining fill material to be placed in the backfill zone. Our opinions are based on observations while on site. We will continue to monitor the construction of the earthwork phase of the patio and retaining wall development project on a part time basis and are able to return to the site upon request. Upon arriving to the site we met with Ross the landscape contractor to discuss plans. We were informed that the northern retaining wall alignment had been filled with an additional 4 inches of 5/8" minus crushed rock for a leveling pad. Additionally, we were informed that more type 17 had been added to the backfill zone behind the proposed walls and another 12-inches of type 17 structural fill was placed. Placement of the retaining wall blocks would begin later in the day. We evaluated the surface of the fill placed within the northern wall alignment and the backfill zone with a 1/2-inch diameter steel probe rod. We were generally able to probe 1 to 2-inches which we interpreted as medium dense or better conditions. We were informed that backfrlling of the retaining wall would happen throughout the day, and were requested to return later in the day to test an additional 6 inch layer of type 17 backfill. PM Visit: In -place density test results indicated 95 percent or better compaction. Based on the results of our in -place density tests and probing evaluation it is our opinion that the backfill materials observed today were placed and compacted adequately. Upon arriving to the site, we met with the landscape workers, to discuss plans. We observed that the contractors were in the process of constructing the block walls and the northern wall was currently 4 blocks high and type 17 backfill was approximately level with top of wall. An approximately 18 inch wide zone of free draining rock consisting of 1.25 clean was placed behind the northern wall and was separated from the type 17 by filter fabric to form a drainage chimney behind the wall. We also observed 4-inch wall drains were installed behind the base of the wall and daylighting the base of the wall in the western corner into a gravel bed. Although not directly observed, we were informed geogrid was placed behind the eastern and western wall alignments and saw the geogrid onsite ready to install. We evaluated the surface of the fill placed within the northern wall alignment and the backfill zone with a 1/2-inch diameter steel probe rod. We were generally able to probe 1 to 2-inches which we interpreted as medium dense or better conditions. We were told that the backfill was compacted with the small vibratory drum roller. We also performed in -place nuclear densometer tests on the type 17 backfill behind the proposed walls and obtained results greater than or equal to 95 percent compaction per ASTM D 1557 as shown on the attached density tests results sheet.
