Joseph,
We are Structural Engineers, licensed in Washington State. Today, at your request, I met with
you at the address above, to make a general evaluation of items required for the new roof framing. The
roof trusses of concern, which are part of an addition under construction,
The building inspector asked for specifications for the existing roof trusses, presumably
because he has assumed that a portion of the existing trusses have received new loads from the roof of
the new addition. However, specifications for the existing trusses cannot be obtained, because they are
roughly 12 years old (information provided by Mr. Linder.
I went with you upstairs to examine area of concern, in which new 2x 12 rafters were overbuilt
on top of the existing trusses. However, the new 2xl2s do not add significant load to the existing
construction, because the new 2xl2s are supported by a new beam, and cantilever over the existing
roof rather than bearing on it directly. Instead, the 2xl2s are supported on a new wood beam which
also supports the older trusses.
I also made a visual examination the original construction of the older trusses. Those trusses
appear to have been correctly installed. All the roof construction I looked at appears to be in
conformance with the record set of plans kept at the site.
Please note I have not reviewed the new construction in detail, nor have I made any structural
calculations pertaining to the construction.
This report and assessment is not comprehensive, and it based on my cursory visual inspection
(no testing and no calculations were performed) as described above, and on my experience with similar
structures. I only examined areas of concern which were brought to my attention. My conclusions
cover only structural concerns, and only in the limited areas described. No consulting was provided
with regard to non-structural issues.
No warranty is intended or given for any part of the structure. Should you have any other
questions or concerns, or if in the future you notice any differences from or significant changes to those
conditions described above, you should contact CSES for a revised evaluation.
Sincerely,
John S. Apolis, P.E., S.E.
