ORDINANCE NO. 2349
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS, WASH-
INGTON, CHANGING THE NAME OF CHAPTER 2.01 OF
THE EDMONDS CITY CODE TO BE ENTITLED "MAYOR";
ADDING A NEW SECTION 2.01.010 TO THE EDMONDS
CITY CODE DEFINING THE DUTIES OF THE MAYOR;
ADDING A NEW SECTION 2.01.030 TO THE EDMONDS
CITY CODE PROVIDING FOR A LIMITATION ON THE
NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE TERMS A PERSON MAY SERVE
AS MAYOR; ADDING A NEW SECTION 2.01.040 TO THE
EDMONDS CITY CODE PROVIDING THAT THE MAYOR'S
POSITION SHALL BE FULL-TIME; ADDING A NEW
SECTION 2.01.050 TO THE EDMONDS CITY CODE
PROVIDING FOR SETTING THE MAYOR'S SALARY; AND
PROVIDING THAT THE TWO CONSECUTIVE TERM
LIMITATION NOT APPLY TO THE PERSON CURRENTLY
HOLDING THE OFFICE OF MAYOR.
WHEREAS, the City Council submitted an advisory ballot to
the voters at the November 1982 election on the question of
whether or not the mayor's position should be full-time, and
WHEREAS, a majority of voters indicated a preference that
the office of Mayor be full-time, and
WHEREAS, the City Council had previously, by Resolution
No. 526, set forth certain other parameters for the full-time
Mayor, now, therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS, DO ORDAIN AS
FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The title of Chapter 2.01 of the Edmonds City
Code is hereby changed to read "Mayor".
Section 2. A new section 2.01.010 is hereby added to the
Edmonds City Code to read as follows:
"2.01.010 DUTIES
The Mayor shall be the chief executive and administrative
officer of the City, in charge of all departments and
employees, with authority to designate assistants and
department heads. The Mayor shall see that all laws and
ordinances are faithfully enforced and that law and order is
maintained in the city, and shall have general supervision of
the administration of city government and all city interest.
Section 3. A new section 2.01.030 is hereby added to the
Edmonds City Code to read as follows:
"2.01.030 TERM LIMITATION
No person shall be elected to the office of Mayor for more
than two terms consecutively, and no person who has held the
office of Mayor for more than two years of a term to which
some other person was elected Mayor shall be elected to the
office of Mayor for more than one consecutive term
thereafter. Nothing herein shall be deemed to limit the
number of terms that person may serve as Mayor, so long as
the person does not exceed the number of consecutive terms
set forth herein.
Section 4. A new section 2.01.040 is hereby added to the
Edmonds City Code to read as follows:
"2.01.040 FULL-TIME POSITION
The Mayor shall devote full time to execution of the duties
of the office of Mayor and shall not engage in any occupation
or profession inconsistent with the full-time performance of
the duties of Mayor.
Section S. A new section 2.01.050 is hereby added to the
Edmonds City Code to read as follows:
"2.01.050 SALARY
The Mayor shall receive a salary in such amount as the City
Council may from time to time establish by ordinance.
Section 6. The limitation on terms set forth in Section
2.01.030 of the Edmond City Code shall apply only to the persons

elected to and holding the office of Mayor on and after
January 1, 1984.
Section 7. If any section, sentence, clause or phrase of
this ordinance should be held to be invalid or unconstitutional
by a court of competent jurisdiction, such invalidity or
unconstitutionality shall not affect the validity or
constitutionality of any other section, sentence, clause or
phrase of this ordinance.
Section 8. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect
after passage and publication by posting and on January 1, 1984.
