ORDINANCE NO. 2401
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS, WASHING -
TON, SUSPENDING THE OPERATION OF SECTION
17.40.040 OF THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CODE FOR
A LIMITED PERIOD OF TIME AND AS APPLIED TO
CERTAIN LEGAL, NONCONFORMING SIGNS.
WHEREAS, the City Council finds that the area of the
City of Edmonds located along Highway 99 and zoned for General
Commercial (CG) uses may be different in nature and character
than other areas and zone districts of the City of Edmonds
and,
WHEREAS, Chapter 20.60 of the Community Development
Code containing regulations for the design, use and location
of signs in the City of Edmonds, does not differentiate
Highway 99 as a special design district and therefore applies
the same there as in any other similarly zoned area of the
City, and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds it appropriate to
suspend the operation of Section 17.40.040 as it relates to
legal, nonconforming signs that are directly related to the
use or activity conducted on the site of the sign and further
with respect to signs located along Highway 99 in areas zoned
General Commercial, for the purpose of considering amendment
to the sign regulations for that area, now, therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS, WASHINGTON,
DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The operation and effect of Section
17.40.040 of the Community Development Code shall be and
hereby is suspended from May 16, 1983 until May 16, 1984 or
later as the Council may by ordinance direct, as it applies
only to signs meeting the following criteria:
1. Signs which are directly related to the use or
activity operated on the site of the sign;
2. Signs which are located along Highway 99 and on
property zoned General Commercial (CG);
3. Signs which conformed to the Edmonds City Code prior
to May 16, 1978 but which were made nonconforming by
the passage of Ordinance No. 1994 which became
effective on May 16, 1978, and
4. Signs which have not been brought into conformance
with the current requirements of Chapter 20.60 of the
Community Development Code as of May 16, 1983.
Section 2. This ordinance shall in no way affect any
other provision of Chapter 17.40 or any provision of Chapter
20.60 of the Community Development Code except as expressly
provided herein. Section 17.40.040 shall remain in full force
and effect as applied to signs not directly related to the use
or activity operated on the site of any sign, and as applied
to all other areas and zone districts of the City of Edmonds.
Section 3. This ordinance shall be in full force and
effect five (5) days after passage and publication by posting
as provided by law.
