Series 2000B/LF2000B
Indoor Installation
Ames Series 2000B/LF2000B Double Check Valve
Check local codes for installation requirements. Pipe lines
should be thoroughly flushed to remove foreign material
before installing the unit. A strainer should be installed as
shown, ahead of backflow preventer to prevent disc from
unnecessary fouling. Install valve in the line with arrow on
valve body pointing in the direction of flow.
For indoor installations, it is important that the valve be easily
accessible to facilitate testing and servicing. Do not install in a
concealed location.
Do not install with strainer when backflow preventer is used
on seldom used water lines which are called upon during
emergencies, such as fire sprinkler lines, etc.
It is important that Series 2000B/LF2000B be tested
periodically in compliance with local codes, but at least once
a year or more often depending upon system conditions.
Regular inspection, testing and cleaning assurs maximum life
and proper product function.

Parallel Installation Consult Local codes for Approval
Two or more Series 2000B or LF2000B smaller size valves may
be piped in parallel (where approved) to serve a larger supply
pipe main. This type of installation is employed whenever it is
vital to maintain a continuous supply of water/where interruptions
for testing and servicing would be unacceptable. It also has
the advantage of providing increased capacity where needed
beyond that provided by a single valve and permits testing
or servicing of an individual valve without shutting down the
complete line.
For two valve installations the total capacity of the devices
should equal or exceed that required by the system.
The quantity of valves used in parallel should be determined
by the engineer's judgement based on the operating
conditions of a specific installation.
Fire Protection System Installations: The National Fire Protection
Agency (NFPA) Guidelines require a confirming flow test to be
conducted whenever a "main line" valve such as the shutoff valves
or a backflow assembly have been operated. Certified testers of
backflow assemblies must conduct this test. The trim valves of the
detector meter bypass line, on assemblies so equipped, should be
shut off during the confirming flow test. When the test is completed
the trim valves must be retuned to a fully open position.

Servicing the First and Second Check Valves
Before servicing be certain water is turned off or shutoff valves are closed
1. After removing the cover, remove the retainer for the body bore. The check valve
modules can now be removed from the valve by hand or with a screwdriver.
Note: For Series 2000B or LF2000B sizes'/2" - 2", the seats and springs of the first
and second check modules are not interchangeable. The heavier spring and smaller
diameter seat belong with the first check module.
2. The check seats are attached to the cage with a bayonet type locking
arrangement. Holding the cage in one hand, push the seat inward and rotate
clockwise against the cage. The seat, cage, spring and disc assembly are now
individual components.
3. The disc assembly may now be cleaned and reassembled or, depending on its
condition, it may be discarded and replaced with a new assembly from the repair
kit. O-rings should be cleaned or replaced as necessary.
4. Reassemble the check valve module in the reverse order. Check modules are
installed in the valve body with the seats facing the valve inlet. The modules must
be securely in place before the retainer can be replaced. On the 3/4" - 1 " size, this
retainer may have to be tilted slightly into place. Replace cover.

Description
The RD13 Riser (with NPT connectors) is constructed from Listed
CPVC products suitable for fire sprinkler services subject to the
limitations and installation requirements of Flameguard® CPVC pipe
and Spears® CPVC fittings. The RD13 Riser incorporates a VSR-SG
flow switch, gauge, and drain/test valve. The VSR-SG flow switch is
equipped with union connection to facilitate the installation and removal
of the switch in confined spaces.
Installation
1. Using appropriate sealant, thread the female adapter on to the
main water supply. Then glue the riser assembly to the female
adapter. Pipe the drain connection to an adequate drain location
capable of handling the drain discharge. The riser can be mounted
in the horizontal or vertical position. Direction of flow is indicated
in Fig. 1. The waterflow switch must be located on the top or
on the side of the pipe when installed in the horizontal position.
This will prevent debris from entering the throat of the waterflow
switch which could interfere with proper operation.
2. Following CPVC manufacturer's instructions for preparation and
gluing of CPVC piping systems, glue the main riser to the main
supply line for the sprinkler heads. NOTE: All glued connections
must be completed and cured before the flowswitch is installed.

3. A thread sealant shall be used in making threaded connections. Teflon® thread tape is the recommended sealant. Some thread sealants other
than Teflon thread tape contain solvents or other materials that may be damaging to CPVC. For other types of thread sealants, which have been
specifically investigated and confirmed to be "System Compatible", refer to www.spearsmfg.com. Attach gauge to riser. Apply Teflon® tape to
male fitting of gauge only. See Fig 1.
4. Check to make sure the proper paddle is installed on the switch. (Paddle size must match the riser pipe size and Tee manufacture.)
5. Install the flow switch to the RD13 Riser. Verify that the o-ring is properly positioned in its groove. Hand tighten the nut to the union after
orienting the flow switch in the appropriate direction to detect waterflow. The paddle must not rub the inside of the Tee or bind in any way. The
stem should move freely when operated by hand. See Fig. 1. NOTE. Do not leave switch cover off for an extended period of time.
6. The side of flow switch must be perpendicular with the riser piping. See Fig. 3.
Testing
The frequency of inspection and testing for the Model VSR-SG and its associated protective monitoring system, should be in accordance with applicable
Codes and Standards and/or the authority having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more frequently.) If provided, the inspector's
test valve (usually located at the end of the most remote branch line) should be used for test purposes. If there is no remote inspection test connection;
a short length of hose may be connected to the discharge of the 1" drain line valve, or if the drain line is connected to a drain such as a slop sink or
storm drain that will sufficiently handle the discharge of the main drain valve. The drain valve can be used to test the operation of the VSR-SG switch.
A minimum flow of 10 GPM (38 LPM) is required to activate this switch. An orifice equal to the smallest sprinkler head orifice used in the system shall
be attached to the drain line for testing purposes.
Maintenance
The VSR-SG waterflow switch should provide years of trouble -free service. The retard and switch assembly are easily field replaceable. In the
unlikely event that either component does not perform properly, please order replacement retard switch assembly stock number 1029030. There is no
maintenance required, only periodic testing and inspection..
Removal
• To prevent accidental water damage, all control valves should be shut tight and the system completely drained before waterflow detectors are removed or
replaced.
• Turn off electrical power to the detector, then disconnect wiring.
• Loosen nut on union fitting.
• Lift detector clear of pipe.

STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES for plastic piping systems. Suitability for the intended service application should be determined by the installer and/
or user prior to installation of a plastic piping system. PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY, all piping system components should be inspected for damage or
irregularities. Mating components should be checked to assure that tolerances and engagements are compatible. Do not use any components
that appear irregular or do not fit properly. Contact the appropriate manufacturer of the component product in question to determine usability.
Consult all applicable codes and regulations for compliance prior to installation.
Solvent Weld Connections — Use quality solvent cements and primers formulated for the intended service application, pipe size and type of joint. While
the pipe and fitting materials may be compatible with the intended medium, the solvent cement may not be. Consult the manufacturers for suitability of
use. Read and follow the cement and primer manufacturers' applications and cure time instructions thoroughly. Be sure to use the correct size applicator.
Threaded Connections — Use a quality grade thread sealant. WARNING: SOME PIPE JOINT COMPOUNDS OR PTFE PASTES MAY CONTAIN
SUBSTANCES THAT COULD CAUSE STRESS CRACKING TO PLASTIC. Spears® Manufacturing company recommends the use of Spears® BLUE 75TM
Thread Sealantwhich has been tested for compatibility with Spears® products. Please followthe sealant manufacturers' application/installation instructions.
Choice of an appropriate thread sealant other than those listed above is at the discretion of the installer. 1 to 2 turns beyond FINGER TIGHT is generally
all that is required to make a sound plastic threaded connection. Unnecessary OVERTIGHTENING will cause DAMAGE TO BOTH PIPE AND FITTING.

1. DESCRIPTION
Viking Freedom° Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinkler VK494 is a small
thermosensitive, glass -bulb residential sprinkler designed for installation on
concealed pipe systems where the appearance of a smooth ceiling is desired. The
orifice design, with a K-Factor of 4.9 (70.6 metric*), allows the sprinkler's efficient
use of available water supplies for the hydraulically designed fire -protection
system. The fast response glass bulb operating element and special deflector
characteristics meet the challenges of residential sprinkler standards.
The sprinkler is pre -assembled with a threaded adapter for installation with a
low -profile small -diameter cover assembly installed flush to the ceiling. The two-
piece design allows installation and testing of the sprinkler prior to installation
of the cover plate. The "push -on", "thread -off' design of the concealed cover
plate assembly allows easy installation of the cover plate after the system has
been tested and the ceiling finish has been applied, while also providing up to
1/2" (13 mm) of vertical adjustment. The cover assembly can be removed
and reinstalled, allowing temporary removal of ceiling panels without taking
the sprinkler system out of service or removing the sprinkler. The Electroless
Nickel PTFE (ENT) coating has been investigated for installation in corrosive
atmospheres and is C-UL-US-EU Listed as corrosion resistant as indicated in the
Approval Charts. The ENT finish is only available for the sprinkler assembly, the
cover plate is not plated.

5. OPERATION
During fire conditions, when the temperature around the sprinkler approaches its operating temperature, the cover plate detaches,
releasing the deflector. Continued heating of the exposed sprinkler causes the heat -sensitive liquid in the glass bulb to expand,
causing the glass to shatter, releasing the yoke and pip cap and sealing spring assembly.. Water flowing through the sprinkler
orifice strikes the deflector, forming a uniform spray pattern over a specific area of coverage determined by the water supply pres-
sure at the sprinkler to extinguish or control the fire.
6. INSPECTIONS, TESTS AND MAINTENANCE
Refer to NFPA 25 for Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements.

DESCRIPTION
Viking Freedom° Residential Concealed Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler VK490
is a small high -sensitivity solder link and lever residential sprinkler designed for
installation on concealed pipe systems, where the appearance of a smooth wall is
desired. The sprinkler orifice design, with a K-Factor of 5.8 (83.6 metric*), allows
the sprinkler's efficient use of available water supplies for the hydraulically designed
fire -protection system. The operating element and special deflector characteristics
meet the challenges of residential sprinkler standards.
The sprinkler is hidden from view by a low profile, small diameter cover plate
installed flush to the wall. The cover plate is available in several decorative finishes

5. OPERATION
During fire conditions, when the temperature around the sprinkler approaches its operating temperature, the cover plate detaches.
Continued heating of the exposed sprinkler causes the fusible element to disengage, releasing the sealing assembly. Water flowing
through the sprinkler orifice strikes the flow shaper, forming a uniform spray pattern over a specific area of coverage determined
by the water supply pressure at the sprinkler to extinguish or control the fire.
