APPROVED BLD BLD2020-0700+Structural_Analysis_or_Calculations+8.7.2020_9.47.56_AMBURT ENGINEERING August 6, 2020 Julie Schoening 523 Paradise Ln Edmonds, WA 98020 RE: Site visit to assess wall for partial removal Dear Ms. Schoening: 18530 MERIDIAN AVE N. SHORELINE, WA 98133 I visited your property on March August 5, 2020 to assist with your planned alteration at the lower level of your home. The intended remodel scope includes removal of a section of exterior wall to place a 6068 sliding door. Removal of the wall will also require installation of a header to support the gravity loads from the roof, floor, and deck above. I have included a partial framing plan of the main floor and deck below in Figure 1. The figure is oriented such that north is upward and shows the approximate location of the intended opening. The opening is expected to be approximately 6'-2" wide, and will remove approximately 12 inches from the top of the stem wall. The wall will be cut so that the threshold is flush at the basement slab on grade. Hence the foundation will remain with continuous bars through the footing. Figure 2 shows a photograph verifying that the footing drain is installed well enough below the grade that cutting the concrete from the top of the stem wall will not affect the drainage. The contractor should exercise care in not damaging the footing drain, and providing bedding and cover material to protect it from any traffic through the new doorway. SHORELINE, WA 98133 The header over the new doorway should consist of at least two 2x8's of Douglas- Fir No. 1 grade. I have attached the calculations justifying the selection of this header. The framing is typical and does not warrant specific details, but should be installed by a qualified contractor. I appreciate your business and will strive to help you meet any future structural analysis and/or design goals. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the statements made or recommendations included herein. I am available to recommend professional contractors who are capable of properly doing any work you might require. BURT ENGINEERING Sincerely, BURT ENGINEERING PLLC Cornell E. Burt, P.E.
