Sorry for the confusion, but we are actually not replacing the deck. We are just repairing a very small portion of the wood members of the existing deck. The scope is just to replace a portion of a rotten beam and a few wall studs. There will be no new posts or footings required. Would a Critical Areas Study still be required in this case? The dry rot being replaced can also be in the posts that support the deck, which would then require new footings. Also, we see applications come in for replacement of decks that were never originally permitted, which is why a Critical Areas Study is required. I believe it is $55 for an updated CRA. I was in the process of submitting a deck replacement building permit and was notified along the process that I would need to apply for a critical areas determination if there was not one on file in the last (5) years. After talking with the receptionist at developmental services she helped me find an old critical areas determination from 2007 as the most recent on file (see attached). There will not be any ground disturbance with this project, there will only be structural repairs made to dry rot, any wood that has dry rot will be replaced with like kind wood/structure. The receptionist mentioned that I might be able to include a narrative explaining the replacements as an attachment to the permit submittal but said you would be the best person to talk to about how to do this so the application is not put on a hold. Please let me know if you would prefer that I apply for a different sort of permit as well. The project address is 731 Laurel St, Edmonds, WA 98020.
